Hi,
Maybe a bit silly question....anyway... I haven’t done much research on that and looking to hear from the expert….
However, I’ve lived in 2 countries prior to USA and there was always a mandatory annual checkup for the technical conditions and safety of the registered vechiles.
Now, in California you have to pass smog check only, but what about these folks, who doesn’t care to replace in time breaks, tires etc and end up crashing their cars into other?
Does it make sense. Is it enough just to say “it’s driver’s responsibilities”?
What do you think?

Yes, Mr. Nanny-State. It is the responsibility of owners of vehicles to maintain their cars, not the government's.

I'm in no hurry to open another opportunity for the government to stick their hand in my wallet. No thanks.

Also, most accidents in this country are caused by driver behavior, not mechanical failure - although drivers may try and blame it on that or poor road design or any other number of excuses.

Mechanical failures are more common in countries where older vehicles are driven that don't have the improved brake systems & steering systems or the finances to keep good tires on the vehicle.

Well, them why we have to pay for a 'Uninsured Motorist Clause' existed?
shouln't the other driver carry insurance? It's must too....but we are paying for it, cause WE ALL KNOW there are people around VIOLATING....
How would you suggest to catch them and take down their potentially dealyed weapons ?

I think the cost can be offset from insurance premium, the insurance companies will have to participate...
Maybe you are right about mechanical failure not being a common cause of the accidents, need to find some statistic...Numbers will talk...

Who pays the insurance companies?
We do. How will that not be money out of my pocket? Money, I might add, that would be better used to maintain my car.

You are asking to create a bureacracy ($$$) that will not fix the majority of traffic accidents.

While I was still on active duty down at Homestead AFB, in Florida
I think that we had mechanical inspections. That is the only place
that I can remember needing to get them.
A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

The present testing regime is for air quality, not road safety. The cops only care that all your lights work and you're not being a menace.

Pony dude...

As you can see there are many of us that don't think much of your idea...

You see we believe in freedom... and if I don't fix my car that's my problem...if I cause an accident it's my fault and I pay... there are stinking laws on the books now to cover any situation...but according to you we need "mo"..?

When you have a stinking nanny state like you came from that wants to be involved in all aspects of your life... that means you have to pay a lot more taxes to have some idiot tell you for instance that your tire's air pressure is not at the right setting... and then hands you a bill for the cost of the that inspection.

My question is...

Why do immigrants like you, who come to our great country because of our great lifestyle, always want to change things to be more like the stinking societies they escaped from.. .? I don't get that...

Please give us the "enlightened" view as to why immigrants like you have this "proclivity"...

Just dying to hear back...

Love you tho...just curious..

Well, dear EDF, I don’t like demagoguery too much…however, lets try…
I can’t speak for all the immigrants, but I can tell you what I see, and believe me I can compare, I lived before in one socialistic and one half socialistic/capitalistic countries.
I am not saying what is good/bad, I do really love USA in my own way and of course appreciate the chance living here, it also was my choice, even though the country before is democratic and my life quality there was not less then here, I haven't had to run saving my life...etc.
But , you know, how can I tell you that…things are conceived in comparisons.
So you tell, everyone should take care of their stuff and make sure to follow the rules, but in reality there are some who don’t.
We all know it, this is the reason you are buying the insurance product like crazy in US, right? This is the reason, for example, the healthcare system is rotten, and our country is an the end of the long list of countries having great medical system. What about unemployment, crime, poverty in our great country? You are happy with that or you only care about yourself as I see it?
I am not a socialist, but I believe that the system can be optimized, I don’t want as well more taxes, I believe the big money is already in the game and all we need is to have system optimization. No taking any freedoms, more taxes, but revisiting the problematic areas….This is not an easy task with all the politic games and lobbies…I guess it will remain a wish only.
BTW, the original post was concerning for safety of lawful drivers, not an attempt to get more taxes on us, maybe you better think about other solution to prevent such a problem...

Smog checks are as Darth said simply to ensure vehicles are not excessively polluting although the frequency to get a smog check is dependent on where you live. In this area it is every 2 years but others like Tahoe it is every 4 or only when transferring (selling) a car.

Uninsured motorist insurance coverage is to protect you and your assets from an uninsured or under-insured motorist. While we are all supposed to have insurance and fined if caught, many still still drive uninsured risking liability if they get in an accident (and generally these folks do not have a significant amount of wealth or income to be lost.

Auto dealers would love mandatory safety inspections $$$$$
