One band I never saw despite loving their music (they toured very little in their heyday) was Steely Dan. Now that Walter Becker has died it will be impossible. however, Steelin Dan will be performing at the Harris Center. These are local talents that do a pretty amazing job of playing the complex stylings of Steely Dan.

Tickets were very reasonable and we got great seats. Check them out! Nov 24th at The Harris Center

Overall, a very enjoyable show! The only song I thought did not come across well was Green Earrings. Too bad, was one of my favorites, but something about the performance was off.

The big missing tunes were Dirty Work and Deacon Blues. Musically, everybody was on point. It took a bit to get used to the vocals being different, but was still very well done.  The A/V work had a few hiccups, but it was cool how they wove the vintage video in.   As for the band members. Hmm.

The back-up singers didn't get to really show their vocal skills except on one song with solos (but hey, they are back up singers). The horns were solid all the way through with a great sax solo on FM. The rhythm section was poppin the whole night with the bassist being the most entertaining person on stage (although from where I sat, his notes were sometimes muddy in the mid-range... might be my old ears). You could tell he enjoyed being there! Drummer was on point. Didn't get much attention, but that was because he was so solid. Keyboard player/manager hit all the right notes and seemed to be enjoying himself. Guitar player was spot on some very complex work (including the mouthbox on Haitian Divorce), He made it look easy (as pros tend to do), but I'm not sure I saw him smile or engage the audience. lead singer had great pitch, of course the tone was different, and sometimes the phrasing was different, but again, a pro. The only real pick I had (and this is entirely subjective) is that some front men have "it". Steelin Dan felt more like a great ensemble rather than having a leader taking us (and the band) down that musical road. I'm not sure I am conveying what I am thinking...hmmm

Anyway, I would definitely go see them again despite my MINOR quibbles

Hey Joe

How big a crowd did they draw?

I am curious, because you can see them play at Swabbies or local clubs for half what Harris Center was charging, and I wondered if it would sell well.

Didn't do much rubbernecking, and we were down in front, but there were definitely balcony seats sold. Seemed pretty full on the exit as well.  I think their next performance is in January in Mill Valley.  Only two other 2019 shows scheduled at this time (both in summer).

I do like Swabbies. We split an Uber last time we went so it really wasn't bad (think 30ish), plus that meant that The AJ who usually is DD got to get his groove on.

The Rio Ramazza Marina down there had some pretty cool events like Reggae, old school, crawdad festivals, but I just checked and it said they are closed. not sure if for the season, or permanently.

Hey Joe, I brought my 2 sons, 26 and 27 year old sons who are well educated in good music since they were young.  We were second row, on the right side.  I must say, they were very good...!   I liked the singer, he was good and entertaining, a little alto from the original but a fine showman and technically very good.   Loved the horn section, always a joy to my ears, a good horn section...!  All three of them were very good, well tuned to the music they were trying to replicate, not a small task by any means.   Base guy was really into his job, drummer was top notch, top notch for sure, the guy is very, very good....!   Backup girls (women) singers were awesome and had good pipes, especially the older one.....  Keyboard guy was very good, very close to the original licks....  Lead guitar guy was technically pretty good but not really there (emotionally) and he got lost a few times during critical and complicated sections.... Sound guy had him a bit too muted during some critical riffs that should have been louder, not subdued...  But he (the lead) had probably the most biggest shoes to fill of them all on the stage.  Overall, I'd say an A- performance, or a 9.5 out of 10.  But I am hard to please musically....   I would recommend them to others for sure, now that we can't really see the real deal any more.  RIP Walter Becker.

And I was at the Led Zeppelin 2 concert last month....   Now that was very awesome, the guitar work was spectacular.  Of the two I'd say Led Zep was my favorite, but just by a smidgen.

And I did these two concerts as a replacement for my usual pilgrimage to the bay area in October to see my favorite musician, Neil Young and his Bridge School Benefit.  I do so miss those concerts....!  I have been to maybe 15 or 20 over the years....   My favorite concert of all time is the Bridge School Concert and I was a faithful attendee.  Maybe someday it will come back....?   Neil does what he does, does what he feels like, does it for the music, and that is it...  We "Rustys" just have to be patient....  I will just eat a peach and wait....

Ha!  I wish I would have paid more attention...We actually noticed you because we joked that your two "boys" must be the youngest people there!  We were two rows back one sear in from the aisle in the mid section.  The crowd was definitely....seasoned. You know,  AARP and AMAC could have scored quite a few signups if they had a booth there.

Side note: just joined AMAC first year free and they offer silver at .85 cents over spot.  The cheapest local place it is 1.75 over. No biggie if you are only buying a couple ounces, but if you buy bulk...

BTW, You were right about the guitar sound mix.

Best show I have seen in ages is 2 Cellos. Saw them in SLO a couple years ago, then saw them in downtown San Jose. Now they play huge venues and as much as I'd like to see them, I really cant see spending 200 a seat. In SLO they were 20.00 and the meet and greet was free, not VIP only. Plus, my days of going to huge venues are over. It's fun to see the Who in LA Colosseum when you are  a teen, but when you get older, the idea of the crowds, crappy seats and money grabbing concessions wears thin. I much prefer semi local talent in small venues. Sutter Creek Theater gets some really good shows, and it's just a 40 minute drive. You can also get groupons for Sutter Hotel quite often. Makes for a decent date night  Plenty of other nicer lodging as well. I wish 3 stages did less musicals and more "interesting" acts. I have written them a few times about unique shows I thought us folks in Folsom would enjoy.

Joe, that is funny.....!   I told my boys, turn around, look around, you are the youngest ones here....!  The old saying for concerts now, "You could not swing a dead cat by the tale without hitting some dude with grey hair and a ponytail".   And my boys really liked it.  Both can play instruments and read music and have been to a lot of concerts over the years, part of their education.  And I love 2Cellos, Lindsey Stirling, and Apocalyptica of course.  You had me at Cello...!  Just love the Cello, especially Christmas music with the Cello or a great Metallica cover on the Cello.  I'll look into the Sutter Creek thing...?   Sounds like fun.   Regards, Chris
