Folsom Named Best City in California to Raise a Family

September 20, 2016

folsom-soccer-382x287.jpg

With top rated schools, clean, safe streets and parks, and lots of fun stuff to do, Folsom consistently ranks on ‘best of’ lists from a variety of publications.

The latest is Wallethub’s survey of cities in California, ranking Folsom number 1, as the best place to raise a family.

We have miles of biking/hiking nature trails, two lakes, a beautiful historic district, and great park and recreation programming.

Folsom real estate is affordable, and being close to Sacramento and half-way between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, our location is fantastic.

Not surprised at all! This is a great town!

This is an incredibly flawed study.

I reviewed the methodology used and it was not signed off by an official licensed engineer!

In addition, none of the measured criteria involved the diameter of sewer pipes!

Clearly, it's the product of propaganda from our city council!

(Sorry, this line of thinking has invaded every other topic... so I figured I'd get the ball rolling on this one)

If we could just get kids to stop urinating in the water bottle of special needs kid at the top D1 football team high school in the state this study would be a slam dunk.

My husband and I have lived in Folsom for 7 years now and we have no complaints. Every town has its perks but not many give you the same awesome views you get heading west on 50 as you pass El Dorado Hills. The next best thing is the acres of golden hills (green hills during the rainy season) on the south side of 50. The city itself is kept clean, is every growing and inhabited by for the most part, friendly citizens.

Unfortunately for me, being an apartment dweller, the great reviews have increased taxes and rent making it one of the most expensive places to live. I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.

Still no complaints...its a terrific little city!

Wallet hub is a blog, so basically a personal opinion masquerading as a nonbiased study. I dont think any of the lists are true studies. Criteria is determined, and then numbers are crunched. However I think other publications have far more merit such as Forbes or Money.

I do agree Folsom is a wonderful town.

I do find it rather interesting that many people will grab onto anything to promote a city. Some people are advertising far and wide how wonderful Folsom is and encouraging everyone to move here.

I have a friend who calls Folsom/EDH, San Jose east because it's expanding with all the plus and minuses in much the same way.

Sadly those golden brown hills south of 50 will be soon covered with development. EDH is jumping on the bandwagon ahead of S50, and the White Rock coridoor/beautiful hillscape is turning into homes, and retaining walls. The hillscape view is gone. :(

I just hope that Folsom retains its charm as grows.

I heard the talks of development on the south side of 50 but hoped developers would be turned down. I wish county officials would encourage businesses to take residence in current vacant buildings and/or update existing housing rather than build more. There are plenty of FOR SALE signs throughout the town in addition to empty office space. This is unfortunate but money talks. So much for that urban country feel that Folsom and EDH still has.

Folsom is the best place I have ever lived by far in my 60 + years and I have lived in many different places around the country. It deserves the recognition. I do hope we don't turn into another Roseville which although nice has grown at a ridiculous rate. That said I am not against the south of 50 development. There is PLENTY of room and the city can easily handle it imo.

Years ago Folsom had an image of a depressing prison town if you had never been here. Especially if you lived out of state. Perhaps people still think that with the huge shadow of the legendary prison but Folsom is anything but. The prison, out of sight and mind and on beautiful grounds itself.

We live in a great city that is growing and offers so much to it's residents. It also brings people here with it's events and general great feeling as a summer town. We have the trails too (hence my name), the lake, the historic part, the Palladio and the Outlets. Great schools. Every time I walk out my door I get a feeling like I am on vacation. The city has that open air and mountainous feel to it as well. The river and streams, we have it all here. People are jealous too. Trust me on that. Not everyone can afford to live here. I feel blessed to live here and thank my lucky stars that my wife pushed for it. It has more than grown on me.

'Best of' and 'Top ' lists should always be taken with a grain of salt, but Folsom is frequently at the top of lists produced by Money Magazin, Thrillist, Wallethub, Nerdwallet and others.

I do love it and do think that there is tremendous advantage in living here and I encourage people, particularly friends and family from the Bay Area, to come enjoy it too.

I haven't heard anyone else compare it to San Jose, but I have heard detractors call it 'another LA'. Tell your friend that San Jose has a population of almost 1 million, while Folsom has about 72,000, and at build-out, close to 100,000.

I think with smart planning it will retain a lot of its charm. There were fears of newcomers, declining property values, and losing the old charm when Empire Ranch and Broadstone were built, and now the residents of those areas fear the same thing!

It may seem like there are plenty of for sale signs throughout town, but today, there are only 146 homes for sale in Folsom, and we average about 94 closed sales per month. Right now, we're average 34 days on market, and less than 2 month's worth of inventory. In a balanced market, one might expect to have 5 to 6 month's of inventory. The developers won't build homes if there aren't any buyers for them. They just don't take that kind of risk. They will only build if the demand is there, and based on Folsom's market, there is demand.

I believe there are redevelopment funds available for businesses in the Central and Historic Districts, though they city can force landlords to upgrade their properties.

I have lost my loving feeling of our town.  It used to be a nice town that was wonderful to live in.  Now it is so congested.  It shouldn't take 20 minutes to go 7 miles. I don't appreciate that our utilities are not capable of all the new buildings.  Also the water is going to be an issue again and they are not doing anything to make it better.  The Palladio is definitely not a plus.  It is like Bird Cage 2.0.  Who in their right mind thinks people want to walk around to different places out in the elements.  I think Folsom has been missing the mark for a few years now.  It is very sad.  I have lived here since 1980.  So I have seen all of the changes, and I have to say I wouldn't be sad to leave.

The interesting about Palladio, and malls in general, is that the indoor ones are dying en masse. It's partially do to online shopping, to be sure, but outdoor centers are becoming more and more popular.

I was on the city Arts and Culture Commission when Palladio was still in the design phase, and I remember thinking that it wouldn't succeed, as people were going to have to shop in the heat and the cold, but so far, it seems to be doing fairly well.

It's a great town...     ...as long as you keep your family away from 2 Aces...    unless you're Totes White, then you're fine.
