What was the point of spending $900 MILLION on this spillway if were going to continue to follow the same old policies when it comes to releases??? Makes no sense.

#1  The project is not done.

#2 The law governing the reservoir levels has to be amended.

It's interesting how all the armchair water resources project managers don't ACTUALLY work for water resources, they must be overqualified for the job.

Holly Crap--- they are DUMPING--   Over 30,000 CFS outflow  since early today...

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

That means every 3 hours, they are dumping the usage for every person in Folsom for a year (7,48  x 30,000 for gallons per second x 60 seconds x 60 minutes) divided by (89 gallons per person per day x 365)... think on that next time they want us to cut back 30% on our usage. But hey, who needs storage when we can xeriscape?

its like a household living next to a bank and the people in the house see money going in and out of the bank and they say, "hey, look at that!  they are letting money go out of the bank and yet we have to be on a budget!  that's not fair!"

As Steve and 4thGen pointed out, its about flood control. The water managers have an incredibly complex j ob of balancing competing interests, but whatever the rules of engagement, the bottom line is quite simple.  If they are wrong on the side of letting too much water out, they POTENTIALLY contribute to future water shortages if future rains do not materialize, resulting in challenges for residents, farmers and ecosystem health. If they are wrong on the side of not letting enough out and the dam overtops (which came within hours of happening in 1955, when the consequences would have been far less costly), they CAUSE catastrophic flooding resulting in billions of dollars in damage and likely many lost lives. Prudence says you err on the side of letting too much water out.

Yes, they were "dumping" almost 35,000 cfs yesterday, and continue today. But the inflow is over 62,000 CFS. So the net inflow is almost 20,000 cfs. Or nearly 0.5  acre feet per second = 43,200 acre feet per day. At that rate, the lake would fill up before Christmas! I'd be dumping  a lot of water, too, if I were managing the dam.

its more like releasing, rather than dumping.  and its not our water.

Lake is down to 40% of capacity... and they just increased the outflow more.

Does anyone think they are going overboard with the releases? What if the rain stops after this week?

Hey BCF, how are you and Happy New Year..imo it's a good gamble at this point. More rain on the way and it's still quite early in the season. I actually heard a weather person last night say "Good bye drought for Central California". Also the snow pack has potential to be really great this year so there will be that run off. Normally it may be a tough call but I think they are doing right.

hope you are right on the snow pack.  i hear it only has 68 percent of the normal water content though.  Hopefully the rest of this month will change that.

According to the news, we are in for an atmospheric river.  If that is true, the releases don't seem unreasonable.  They still need to re-look at that chart that says on such-and-such day the level can only be X feet in the lake on a certain date in December, January, February, March, April.  It is not the Bureau's fault they have to follow the current law.

I am planning a heck of a garden this summer, though.

This latest round is supposed to bring up to 5 inches in the valley and as much as 10-15 inches in the foothills and mountains. Although the snow line will be above 6,000 feet they expect another 5 - 8 ft of snow. Pretty impressive and it's only the first week in January. There is even talk of closing Yosemite and fears of local flooding too.

Talked to a client with National Parks Service today.  Yosemite is closing as of tomorrow, Friday.  The valley is expected to flood.

And this is exactly why the lake is kept at this level.  Right now there is 131,000 cfs flowing into Folsom lake and it's still increasing.  The lake is up 6 feet in 11 hours even with 30,000 cfs releases.  Maybe they know what they are doing.  Until the spillway is completed the area downstream of the dam remains one of the highest flood hazards in the country with 1 in 100 year protection - worse  than New Orleans.
