Do you have political aspirations? Are you happy with the way things are going, or are you ready for change?

As a Folsom resident and voter, you get to decide this fall as there will be 3 City Council seats up for grabs.

You'll have the chance to cast your vote, and even run for office yourself as  Mayor Kerri Howell, along with Council Members Steve Miklos and Andy Morin see their terms expire at the end of the year.

Although it won't be official until the filing period closes on August 8, all three are expected to run for re-election.

So, what's your hot-button issue?  Development South of Highway 50? Water? Development of the Historic District? Parks? Traffic?

If you're interested in running, the nomination period runs from July 14 to August 8th. It is strongly suggested that you set an appointment with City Clerk Crista Saunders by calling 916 355 7270 to go over procedures.

If you're not running, do your part by being informed and casting your vote.

I thought Turd Ferguson was toying with the idea of running.  I was looking forward to the lawn signs, "Vote for Turd."  The name recognition would probably give him an edge.

Steve, you should run for office!

It's not in the cards for me. I really admire those who do run and those who serve. Very little thanks, and lots of accusations of corruption, incompetence, conspiracy, and just plain dishonesty.

I think the artist formerly known as Turd may indeed run.

"all three are expected to run for re-election"

In other news, the sun is expected to rise in the east tomorrow.

Six years and the newest member is Ernie Sheldon.  Here's the order chronologically.

Steve Miklos    -  1994

Kerri Howell     -  1998

Jeff Starsky     -   2000

Andy Morin      -  2002

Ernie  Sheldon  - 2008

Nobody can go up against the good ol' boy club.

We don't have the $$$$$$ funds for giant campaign signs but worse, we don't have developer buddies who will let us put up giant campaign signs on their properties.

Nobody can win without the advertising benefits that they have built for themselves.  This is how all elections work, the good guys can't win because the bad guys have all the connections and benefits of the good ol' boy club.

That is why we need to elect some new people. Time for some hope and change.

I think if one wants to get elected to City Council, and are starting from zero, they should:

  • Volunteer in the community - this will enable them to meet people, many of whom are influential, and show your commitment to the community. You may win some support and votes. Be about service, though. Volunteering is different from running for office.
  • Join community organizations - Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, networking, etc., again to meet people, and to grow and learn
  • Apply for positions on city commission - Historic District, Library, Arts and Culture, Park and Rec, Planning and more. You will get to work with and get to know the movers and shakers, and again, gain influence.
  • Take classes offered by the City -Citizen's Academy or Leadership Academy. Really learn how the city works, and again, it shows your dedication to your community
  • Join the Chamber of Commerce - This is where you'll meet a lot of business leaders and volunteers. Volunteers love volunteers.

Good leaders are always looking for their replacements. Show yourself as someone who doesn't know it all but wants to learn, grow and serve.

You'll be surprised at how many doors will open for you.

If you take the short route, you've got to have big dollars or big dollars behind you, and a campaign manager, too.

Personally, I would vote for someone who didn't do any of those things, based purely on his or her platform and motivation for running.

Not this time, but the next time around it will be easier to get a seat.

Ernie Sheldon said he wouldn't be running again. That will be two years down the road though.

About the only way a person could unseat Kerri Howell, Steve Miklos or Andy Morin would be if

one of them decides to step down and they don't plan on doing that.

There is one other way to get a new person in. Get a lot of people to help you and go out and

meet the people. Get them to vote for you only. Vote just once and do not vote for any of the other

people running.  If you can get enough people to just give one vote you might just win.

That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-
