Looks like it's going to be a direct hit...

New Orleans Braces for Powerful Katrina
http://news.yahoo.co...HNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer 55 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS - A monstrous Hurricane Katrina barreled toward New Orleans on Sunday with 165-mph wind and a threat of a 28-foot storm surge, forcing a mandatory evacuation of the below-sea-level city and prayers for those who remained to face a doomsday scenario.

Thousands of people are waiting to get into the Louisiana Superdome for safety as well as clogging highways to get away from the storm.

Some of my family is heading to Atlanta, and some to Houston.

My cousin's wife has to stay behind, as she is a nurse working in a hospital there.

This looks bad. Real bad. The story on SBC Yahoo says it may be a disaster of biblical proportions...

This is what happens when you bury your dead in iron-clad coffins...

A sensible person would bury their dead in a cheap wooden box so as to disintegrate faster.

Although I've often said that if God doesn't destroy New Orleans, He owes Sodom and Gamorah a big apology, biggrin.gif it looks like they got really really lucky this time. The Hurricane veered east at the last moment. It could have been much worse.

Of course, that's bad news for the Biloxi and Mobile area. Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL (just east of Mobile and refered to there as the "Redneck Riviera") got hit hard by Ivan last year and now this. We vacationed in Gulf Shores last summer about a week before Ivan hit. The hotel where we stayed is gone. They're having a tough year down there.

ps: kidding about that Sodom and Gamorah thing - I really like that whole NO area

Steve, I hope your family members are doing well. My niece is attending Tulane and left Saturday afternoon for Houston. It was about a 13 hour drive instead of the normal 8. I saw pictures of Canal and Poydras street on TV. This was down near the ITM (World Trade Center in front of the casino) it wasn't too flooded but there was a ton of debris. I'm sure the Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton lost alot of windows. During their last hurrican in 2002 my husband and I were there for a conference and stayed at the Marriott. We flew in and after arriving they cancelled the conference and closed the airport. Two days without power in steaming hot NOL!

And it's just the beginning of hurricane season.

Can't remember the article, but some scientist calculated that we are going to be seeing more frequent and stronger hurricanes in that part of the country for the next few decades.

Everyone is fine, thanks. They really spread out. Some in Houston, some in Atlanta and some in a small town in Arkansas. My uncle left for Houston yesterday at 8am, got there at 4 the this morning.

I've seen lots of pictures. Terrible damage. The place was truly swamped.

It looks like a long recovery.

I wonder how many countries will be providing aid to the US in the aftermath of this natural disaster.

Probably no other countries will help us.

Yeah, it's strange. I don't remember the last hurricane to hit the east/southeast coast. The big ones have all been going up the gulf it seems.

Glad I don't live in Florida any more. Too many hurricanes have hit that region lately.

I'll guess few, if any. Damage estitames are coming in so far at $25B.
