Slow down during those early morning commutes. I had a pair of red foxes crossed the road on my drive out of American River Canyon about a month ago... Neat to see in the neighborhood...

I have seen a red fox a few times on the abandoned road adjacent to the firehouse near there.

In the last month or so we've seen a coyote on Santa Juanita south of Oak going to and from getting one of the hens (1/4 mile south) for breakfast.

About a week ago I saw what i thought was a coyote by the outlet stores. I wonder if it was a red fox. It was small enough to be a fox.

I've seen large groups of wild turkeys several times the last few weeks -- on Creekside and on Natoma, in front of the prison.

This morning on out walk in the wetlands with the pooch we saw a blue heron take off from the wetlands. Man, those things are HUGE and gorgeous! Wish I had had my camera on; by the time I could have turned it on and aimed it would have been gone.

Compared to coyotes, foxes are closer to the ground with a bushier tail. They seem more shy than coyotes.

A good ID characteristic of the red fox is a white-tipped tail... Do you recall this in your siting?

It was fairly dark so I couldn't see too much detail. That and there was a couple with a stroller walking right towards the animal that we wanted to warn.

Sadly, I saw a dead red fox run over on the powerhouse side of the rainbow bridge about two weeks ago. Poor guy. I suspect all that work on the east end of the canyon for the new bridge is taking away more habitat from them, not to mention other critters who have sought sanctuary as their homes throughout Folsom have been bulldozed over to make suburban sprawl a reality we can all cherish.
Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.

Yep...it's a reality of society I guess. The less native habitat available, means that wildlife will seak out our homes and neighborhoods for the resources they need. The bridge work is mostly a temporary problem for foxes. Since rodents make up a large proportion of their general diet, the removal of open grassland is what they seek out for food. Any of these taken by the bridge development will probably be replaced or mitigated elsewhere with other species in mind...so the foxes would benefit from it. People drive too fast to stop for objects in the road...including wildlife, which is unfortunate.
