The rattlers are out in abundance right now. People are spotting them in the hills, on the trails and a couple were photographed swimming in Folsom Lake.

It doesn't happen often, but rattlesnakes do bite!

BTW, in 16 years living here, and being a frequent trail user, I've never seen one!

I get three in my yard (that i know of) every single year, except last year when I started having a regular resident group of turkeys.  Turkeys hate rattlesnakes, hence I love turkeys!

Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.

If you encounter one, try to estimate its length, then stay more than half that distance from it.  The snake cannot strike effectively over a distance that is greater than half its length.  Best to just stay out of its way.  they're shy and will take off if given the opportunity.  And if you see one, there is a good chance there is another close by.  They actually do travel in pairs.

Saw two last week on the ARP in Carmichael, both sprawled across the bike path around 5 pm.

I usually see one or two per year, although I saw several last fall on the Lake Natoma Trail. It really depends on how often I am out at the prime times (just after sunset in the summer/fall; in the spring, it seems like they can be out any time, depending on the weather).

Yep. With all the rain we had and abundant grass and such, I predict there will be lots this year!

I see on average about 12 a year. I've seen them out as late as mid December on warmer winters. Having said that, I have never actually heard them rattle or show hostility towards my presence. Mostly they just chill and try to stay out of your way. Just keep your eyes and ears open.

You know, just to be safe say a whole length away...just sayin'

Rattlers typically won't bother you if you don't mess with them. I'd be more concerned about poison oak out there.

I'm already at 7 encounters this year so far.
