I usually blast the Grammy's for having pop artists lip-synching while doing overblown crappy dance numbers, and giving awards to people who put out crappy music, but this year was different.
There were some standout performances, from relatively new artists, including The Weeknd, Tori Kelly with James Bay, Alabama Shakes and 12 year old jazz pianist Joey Alexander.
There were tributes. The Eagles with Jackson Browne doing 'Take it Easy' in memory of Glenn Frey, Stevie Wonder with Pentatonix honoring Maurice White, and my favorite, 'Chris Stapleton, Gary Clark Jr. and Bonnie Raitt doing BB King's 'The Thrill is Gone'.
Lady Gaga's tribute to David Bowie was, like her, at times weird but good.
There were some sound problems and several performers had vocal issues, but that's what you get with live music vs. lip-synching, and I'm ok with that.
This was the first time in a long time that I've felt it was about the music, and it was pretty good.
