As for places outside of Folsom, El Noviello on Franklin Blvd and Ernesto's in midtown are great.

La Fiesta is good for fast food Mexican. El Novillero is a sit down place. Both are great, but different.

If you want to stay in the Zip code then the $1 taco @ City Slicker, Lolita's, LaFiesta are all good choices

For a nice site down dinner - authentic can be found at La Placita, for nice ambiance with a twist of flavors that is very local, I like Q'bole

La Fiesta is the best taqueria style joint around.
There is one true hole in the wall in Sac which I'll try to get the name of.
For sit-down, none have really impressed me. Carmelita's in Fair Oaks is as good as any. Not a big Q'bole or Mexquite fan, largely due to price and service. It's hard to pay $15 for a dish that would be half that at a taqueria.

When I have asked two local Mexican families about which place they like in Folsom, their response is, "none of them." When I mentioned some of the places mentioned in this thread, they called them, "unauthentic" and lacking in the true flavor of Mexico.
Where do the local mexican families recommend?
I grew up in central california - Tulare, Kings, Fresno & Kern counties which is the agri-heartland for mexican food.
La Fiesta seems to be the place most frequently mentioned. Besides cheap variety, why is it so great? What's so special about their taco or burrito that makes it better than anyone else's?

Beyond Folsom, there's a hole in the wall place in Sacramento called Lalo's. Not a great area, but their food is great. A dozen chile and cheese tamales always comes home with us.

Also, the Al Pastor is the best around. I'm still trying to find the place with the best chile verde.
