OK- I do not receive the Telegraph but on rare occasions but got one today and decided to review the crime logs list from August 4th through August 9th and find it almost hilarious that there are so many listed as 'vehicle burglary'...

What is funny about it ( not really) is that if you lock your car ( based on this sample of items in the paper) they will break a window and steal NOTHING or will take your license plate ( 2) or your catalytic converter (2) .... and that is only the one in 10

But if you leave it unlocked they will steal any variety of things that should NOT BE LEFT IN or on  AN UNLOCKED VEHICLE IN THE FIRST PLACE---

-2 Bicycles (  and another one unlocked and stolen )

-4 for miscellaneous items

-1 for a GPS

-1 for a WALLET

-1 for a Camera

So in this time frame in Folsom only ONE Car was broken into ( with nothing stolen) as it was locked yet 10 OTHERS had items stolen as they were unlocked...

I was recently visiting a friend and the car parked next to me in the evening had a Wallet on the passenger seat, a GPS on the dash and the window open--- and it was getting dark.

What should we do ??? --- Guess calling the cops to report the theft is what people do ---

Wonder what else we can do ?????

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

I noticed this in the Folsom Telegraph too......

Wake up people...

You always lock your car!!!!!!

You never leave your wallet in your car, even in your garage !!!!!!!

You don't leave your garage door open during the day, or night !!!!!!!!

Folsom500, I do get the Folsom Telegraph, but if you want to know if maybe there are things happening in your neighborhood - uptick in catalytic converter thefts, for example - you can Google Folsom Police Log and see the same thing there.

Probably shouldn't keep your shoes and wallet on your front lawn either.  I actually saw that on this morning's walk as well as someone who started their car, left the door open, and walked back in the house.

Common sense isn't as common as it used to be.

I was in Denver over the weekend and went for a hike at the Garden of the Gods and in the parking lot was a nice Chrysler 300 with all the windows open and an expensive leather brief case sitting in the back seat.  The owner is either very trusting or very naive. Hope their stuff was still in the car when they got back from the hike.

Like 2 Aces stated .... Common sense isn't as common as it used to be.

I've got plenty of stories about that subject. One of my favorites was when I parked directly in front of the restaurant I was meeting someone at, and since it was just opening, I got a prized window seat only about 15 feet from my car.

My briefcase and laptop were on the front seat.

Pretty soon, I saw a bummy looking woman walking slowly up the street, and as she passed each parked car, she would lift the door handle and peer inside, hoping to hit the jackpot. When she got to my car, she got energized, pulling the handles on one side, then running around and trying the other.

I'm sitting there, only a few feet away like, 'Hello!, I'm sitting right here!'

Dejectedly, she moved on, trying the next car, hoping her luck would change.

I never left my laptop in view after that.

One other tip; if you are going to put your valuables in the trunk, do it before you arrive at your destination. Thieves may be watching, and they'll pop your trunk as soon as you leave.

do you remember that advertisement many years ago showing someone leaving something of value in their car, and then someone else coming along and taking it.  I think the tag line was, "don't let a good boy go bad."  as if.

I recall a case many years ago where cops, I believe in New York, were parking a bait car with a VCR sitting on the back seat. They'd arrest the guys who'd open the doors and steal it.

One of these thieves' attorney argued (I believe successfully), that that was a case of entrapment, because everyone in New York should expect their belongings to be taken if they leave them in an unlocked car.

Let me guess: San Francisco !!

Oakland!

As for San Francisco, the place I was raised and where I go as often as possible (will be there Sunday!), there is an epidemic of 'smash and grab' car burglaries.

I met up with my daughter and her boyfriend at Golden Gate Park recently, and someone smashed his window and stole is laptop. 5 others parked nearby were similarly victimized. The cop that responded said, 'I'm sick of this sh*t!' and told me they get 10 to 15 such calls PER DAY in Golden Gate Park, and also at the parking lot near the Cliff House.

I refuse to believe that when someone doesn't lock their door its their fault for getting robbed. People have a responsibility to not rob people,.

Hi, Robert. :) To me it's not an issue of "fault," it's an issue of prevention. If I don't leave valuables in my car no one can take them. If I leave my front door unlocked, someone can easily get in and take my things and, potentially, harm me. I don't have to serve as catalyst for the opportunity. The fact is that there will always be people who rob. I can try to not be one of the victims.

And I would get no comfort, in the middle of losing valuable -- perhaps irreplaceable things -- by telling myself it was the thief's/burglar's "fault." I just do what I can do to limit my vulnerability.

*Naïve Alert*: That's why Robert never locks his car or home. In fact, Robert is probably planning a trip right now to many cities like Chicago, Baltimore, Ferguson, Detroit, Philly, LA, NY, Oakland, SF, etc, to lecture people about "responsibility".

Robert must own the coolest pair of *rose-colored glasses* ever made !! I want a pair of those !! :shades:

The answer lies somewhere in the middle. We all must take precautions and safeguard our possessions, but I don't think we should blame the victim for the actions of a thief.
