Hello. Wanted to know if anyone could tell us some suggested family law attorneys and if you can give me an estimate of how much this type of thing costs to do?

My step-daughter lives with my husband and I and has for some time. There has never been a custody case opened and neither have ever gone to court. We recently found out her mother has been fraudulently receiving welfare and we found out there may be an open child support case. We have reported her for fraud and nothing has happened. We are looking for a lawyer that can help in the process of filing for full custody, as well as help us report the fraud, remove her from assistance, and close the child support case. She has lived with us and her mother has not supported her. She has not used any of the assistance on her daughter and there is no way that we should owe the money back when it is fraud.

Any suggestions and before we call any of the lawyers does anyone know how much estimated this will cost to handle?

Hi Stepmom, and welcome to the forum.

Theresa Stanley is a family law attorney and has been a long time member of the forum. Law & Mediation Office of Teresa A. Stanley

As for costs, most attorneys seem to charge by the hour and I think most range from $250 to $400 per.

PS. I deleted all but one of your posts because you only need to post once, and the other 4 will just clog up the new post list.

Costs could vary wildly, but I second the suggestion of Theresa Stanley. She is my family lawyer; she's whip smart, ethical, and keeps the big picture in mind at all times. She'll protect your stepdaughter and put her needs first, as they should be.

Agree with the two above posts- she helped our family too. Also, I had a somewhat similar case at one point. I notified the IRS, as well. Did a statement of grievous something or other. Do one for every year the fraud has taken place. Each year it accumulates and adds a balance there is a stiff federal fine that can include jail time if it reaches 10k.

<clears throat> anyway.... on to happier thoughts.
