State Lawmaker Proposes No Spanking Law

POSTED: 9:32 pm PST January 18, 2007
UPDATED: 9:43 pm PST January 18, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A California assembly woman introduced a bill Thursday that would make it illegal for parents to spank their young children.

Assembly woman Sally Lieber, a democrat, authored the bill, which would make it a misdemeanor for parents to spank a child three years or younger.

The crime would carry a punishment of up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.

Lieber said the bill is long overdue.

"This bill is not big mother in government in telling parents what to do. It is creating a line in the law that stands on the side of very young children. Children three years or younger are really sitting ducks for punishment. They are no match with the speed, size or force in which an adult is beating them," Lieber said.

Opponents said the government shouldn't tell adults how to be parents.

If the bill passes, Lieber said it would make California the first in the nation to have a spanking law.

Yeah, but those 3 and 1/2 year olds really know how to fight back! I think this law should be extended 'till they're 18. Then it's open season!

I've got a better idea. Let's "ground" the 3 year olds, take away their cell phones, the television, make em mow the lawn and have them do the dishes. That'll teach em....

I can't believe this is what an elected official is writing as a bill. Someone needs to impeach her. After all, she is democrat, and us republicans are good at doing that.

We sure do not need a bill to keep us from spanking our children. If more children got spankings maybe we wouldn't have so many out there speeding and killing and breaking the law in general.

I think these Assembly woman need to utilize their time more effectively.

Doesn't this just fit in nicely with Stevethedads topic on denial?

Ironically many of the legislators in CA are particularly fond of being spanked.

A law shouldn't be passed for spanking children because it should be up to the parents. This is just crazy! They need to focus on things that actually matter!!

I don't agree with spanking because I don't think it's effective. There are many other ways to punish a child and spanking is the quick and easy way out.

I also agree this law would be absurd. I don't spank my kids, just my personal decision, yet I could never condemn a parent's decision to spank, as that is their personal decision, also.

I wonder if this lawmaker thinks the proposed law would prevent child abuse. I don't think so...there is a big difference between spanking and actual physical child abuse. I am sure no law will prevent some sicko from abusing his (or her) child.

I think you've hit it on the head, Sat. Furthermore, if it isn't deemed OK in under three, why is it then OK in over three? Just a really bad, bad idea.
