Sorry to hear this. You would figure Elliott Homes would have put better locks on the homes for how much they cost. After hearing numerous local news stories about "Bump" Keys... I think I will be heading to Home Depot to get a slide lock for our front door... tomorrow.

It's a shame that we have to deal with such things, but I guess it's just a fact of life.

A dog is a totally great idea! Also don't make your routine obvious. If you are going on a trip for a few days, pack you car inside your garage. And if you have two cars leave one in the drivway. That way a stranger might think there is someone home. And it's not a bad idea to leave your tv on with the volume loud while you are at work durring the day. That way when someone comes up to your door to try their bump lock they will hear the tv and not risk breaking in where someone might be home.

I hate to sound like a defeatist, but the primary reason your locks were so effective at keeping you out of your home is that you weren't willing to go around back and simply break a window to gain access.
I do think that an alert dog (the bigger the better!) is probably one of the most effective ways to keep unwelcome people from entering one's property. Of course, you have to like dogs and be willing to take care of them appropriately if you are going to go this route.

In the event of an intruder remember...
you must articulate that you were in fear of your life and the lives of your family...If you can write, you will be alright.
