I had the opportunity to join friends for dinner tonight at Bailies and was reminded of what a gem we have in the older section of Folsom . For those of you unfamiliar or too caught up dining at chain restaurants (i.e., Ruby Tuesday, Macaroni Grill, et al.), Bailies is a really nice alternative and definitely worth your business. Sure, they're in a goofy location (the strip mall at the corner of Coloma and East Bidwell; across from the DMV and gas station) but, once inside, you're in a different world.

I had one of evening specials -- grilled hangar steak with a jalapeno cream sauce, served with onion strings and asparagus. I'm not a fan of spicy sauces but the jalapeno cream was very delicate and exceptional with the hangar. My dining partners had the grill Ahi and the always-wonderful Asian skirt steak. Better still, Tuesday is half-price wine night! We were there between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and almost had the place to ourselves.

The moral of the story is to please give Bailes and other small, out of the way, places your business. It's one of the only things that keeps towns like Folsom unique. Sure, you know that the steak you get at BJ's in Folsom will be just like the steak you had in Salt Lake, in Honolulu, and in Austin, but what fun is that? By my recollection, Bailies has been around for at least eight years so they're probably not going anywhere soon -- bottom line, give them a shot!

Second Wednesday of each month they have a winer come in for a tasting. $10 gets you wine, appetizers (I can't spell hors e'oervrewsds), and if you stay for dinner, you get $10 off. Great deal.

The owner, Arturo, is a great guy, and loves to talk wine, food, family, whatever.

I can't make it tomorrow, but suggest you all do!
