I took some dress shirts of mine to Dry Clean Today and the price for Laundry was $1.50 each. For my wife's shirts ( smaller than mine, but SAME material) is $3.50. Why is that???

Is it because a women's shirt is called a "blouse" and not a dress shirt??

Wasn't there some kind of anti gender discrimination law that passed in CA in refrence to haircuts, dry cleaning etc???

Does anyone have that infop about which law it was ?? (ie.. AB #)

This is ridiculous that they can legally charge MORE than double for the same item.

A few years ago I took a matching pants/blouse outfit of mine to several dry cleaners and asked what they would charge to clean it. I was SHOCKED at the VAST difference in pricing. The highest price was $14; the lowest was Silverado Cleaners, which charges the same price per piece regardless of the gender of the wearer. I don't go often, but believe they charge approximately $2.50 per item dry cleaned. They do charge up front -- smart, since so many people forget to pick up their dry cleaning (at least the work's already been paid for).

They charge more because if they mess up the garment a woman is more likely to go off and complain and the extra charge helps offset the loss of the refunds.

I would assume that the replacement cost of the "blouse" is double what the mens shirt is.

I will never understand why womens clothing, especially the stuff with little material, is so much more expensive. That stuff should be cheap! It's really a disservice to society to gouge women buying skimpy clothing.

The reason frequently given for higher prices for dry cleaning womens' blouses is that they must be ironed by hand because they are too small to fit on the machine used for mens' shirts. Here is some info I found on the specific gender bias pricing bill:

In 1995, Assemblymember Jackie Speier successfully authored AB 1100,
Chapter 866, referred to as the “Gender-Tax Repeal Act.” This law prohibits
business establishments from discriminating based on a person’s gender in the
prices charged for services of a similar or like kind. For instance, dry cleaners
cannot legally charge women more than men to launder shirts of the same size
and requiring the same procedures. The law allows for civil damages of at least
$1,000 or three times the amount of the actual damages, plus attorney’s fees.
AB 587 (Firebaugh), Chapter 261 of 2001, raises the minimum amount in
damages that can be recovered under the Gender-Tax Repeal Act from $1,000
to $4,000.

AB 1088 (Jackson), Chapter 312 of 2001, requires specified business
establishments, such as tailors, hair salons and dry cleaners, to conspicuously
display their prices for each standard service to customers and to provide the
customer with a copy of the price list upon request. Also requires businesses to
post a sign summarizing California’s law prohibiting discrimination with
respect to the price charged for services based on gender.

My daughter works at Silverado, and they do a great job...they have coupons out all the time for $2.25 for drycleaning....

Wow! I just got back from picking up my dry cleaning at a horrible shop here on Natoma.. I had 13 peices and they charged me $111.00!!!!!!! What a crock of B.S. When my husband dropped our laundry off, the ticket said the number of items.,but not the price (that should of been a clue) the kid working there said he didn't know how much it would be, he left it there anyway thinking that it shouldn't be that bad. How wrong we were!. We take all our clothes to be dry cleaned, for years..My husband and I usually drop off 15-20 items every other week, NEVER have we been charged $8.00 for a pair of cotton pants, $7.95 for a rayon shirt etc... there was not one item with a reasonable price. I am so mad! We just moved here a month ago. Well, thanks for letting me vent.

I won't mention the dry cleaners name...yet.

Why do you have all your clothes drycleaned? Wouldn't it be cheaper to launder them yourself?

Were they "horrible" just on their pricing or were the clothes not cleaned properly?

The reason I have my clothes drycleaned is because I like that nice new fresh look. My clothes never look the same after I wash them. I take our shirts, blouses and pants along with some dresses. I wash my own sheets, towels etc.. things I can't ruin! laugh.gif

The clothes came out fine. I have never had a compaint about any cleaners we have used. Our clothes are simple. Some cotton, a few rayon, one or two items of silk.
My compaint is really on the way Village Cleaners did buisness. There was not a price on the reciept, the young employee that had no idea of the price either. When I returned for my clothes there was a woman working there. I asked her about the high bill and to see the price list. I was pointed to the very small price sheet on the wall, (not even close to eye-level) and the sheet showed prices along with "and up" next to the prices. I asked about the "and up" and she said it was $1-$2 dollars difference depending on blah blah blah! It was our mistake to have left our clothes there without knowing their prices. This was an average looking place with an employee that had no clue of the buisness let alone where the price sheet was. My husband left a message to the owner, and has not yet had a reponse. This was a learning experience for us. We will now use Silverado Cleaners for all our clothes seeng as they were recommended highly. Thank you for the info. and thanks for letting me share my awful experience with you.
