We are close to buying a home in Willow Springs and got a Natural Hazard Report on the house. One of the things called out in the hazardous sites section (right after the AeroJet superfund site just south of 50) is that the elementary school (named in the report as Prairie Oaks) is on the California State Priority List for Remediation. It doesn't say what the remediation is for or when it will happen...
I've asked a few friends who are parents of kids at the school and they haven't heard of this before.
Does anyone know what this means? Is it simply an error in the report? If not, what is it and what is being done?
Thanks,

It must be... Gallardo is nowhere near the areas where they have found asbestos. It's right down the street from us, and our neighborhood was all just river rock before it was developed. I find it highly unlikely Gallardo would need remediation. Folsom HS would need it too if Gallardo did.

I checked online and couldn't find any information concerning this...Call Sandra Gallardo school and ask to speak to Mrs. Walden, she is the principal...
Please let us know what you find out...We have small children that will be attending this school soon......It could be a mistake?

The California EPA Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has a program where all proposed school sites are evaluated for potential contamination from past use or naturally-occurring substances. They initially do a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, which involves researching the history of the site back to the first developed use. If they find any cause for concern, they move forward with sampling and/or remediation (as is happening with Empire Ranch Elementary and Vista Del Lago).
That's how this the Prairie Oaks School (I'm assuming this is referring to Gallardo) gets on the database.
Here's what the DTSC website says about the site:
"Site is approximately 10 acres of undeveloped land located approximately 1-1/2 miles south of the downtown business district of the City of Folsom. The subject site is located near a historically gold-dredged area. This property has been historically free of any structures.
DTSC approved the site with a no action determination."

Wow! Great reply, Brown! Thanks for the information. Seems like they should remove the hazard flag if they find there is no cause for remediation.

I'm an environmental scientist. My company conducts environmental assessment and remediation work at gas stations (that's the short definition, anyway).

Yeah, great response...
Hmmm, We just bought a home here a few months ago, and I don't recall seeing anything on the Natural Hazard report about this, about the school...
Now where did I place those reports...
