MCPON's Veterans Day Message
Story Number: NNS071109-28
Release Date: 11/9/2007 2:55:00 PM
From Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON)(SW/FMF) Joe R. Campa Jr.
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Veterans Day, [observed this year on Nov. 12], is a day of respect, of homage and of gratitude. The men and women who have served our country in uniform are a national treasure who continue to inspire us.
They are the veterans who returned from World War II and took it upon themselves to demonstrate the value of service to an entire nation. They are the nurses who provided comfort to the injured on the frozen plains of Korea and they are the Vietnam veterans who speak little of their experiences unless in the company of those who truly understand what service in Southeast Asia meant.
They are your shipmates who have recently served at sea and on the ground performing missions that demonstrate the value and contributions of the American Sailor.
No matter the era, whether it was the patriotism of World War II or the quiet friction of the Cold War, the courage required to wear the cloth of our nation must never be forgotten.
Our veterans are woven into the fabric of America. They lend the character they developed in uniform to the communities in which they live and work. While we should take advantage of every chance we have to thank these men and women, Veterans Day is set aside as our formal means to do so.
I recently visited the Armed Forces Retirement Home. The pride those veterans of all military services take in what you do is equal to the respect we have for them. Service to our nation has bound us together and we must continue to draw on their experiences and value their dedication to our country and our way of life.
Take the time to thank our veterans this Monday. But once the holiday is over, continue to keep them in your thoughts. Remember their service and sacrifice as you consider the role you have in defense of this nation.

A VETERAN
Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life".
That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Thank you to all veterans.
Special thanks to those currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan... as well as their family and loved ones waiting for them.

My mom is a Veteran! At all of 5'0 (she cheated too and stood a lil on tip toes to hit the 5' mark!)
And she called me and said... "you know what I want for my veterans day present?"
"what mom" I said
She said "all I want for vet's day is for the kid to come over and spend the night. I think I earned that. Don't you?"
I thought I was gunna cry!!! "yes mom, you deserve to have your awesome grand kid come stay the night, I will bring him over soon"
Happy Veterans Day!!!!!!!!

Here's a sad story. It's not about love. It's not about sappy stuff. It's about the forgotten.
It's not right!!!

That story is so very sad. It is hard to believe that we let something like this go on year after year.
Something really needs to be done about this. I sure wish I could win the lotto. I would spend a lot just to take care of things like this.
