If you happen to be one of the lucky few in NS who have trees that drip sap during the summer months there is help. Most of the large red oaks found around Conductor, Ballast, and Ashcat are prime vicitim as well as some of the other trees in the neighborhood. THe problem is caused by aphid infestation on the trees and usually starts up when it warms up. A few years ago I had Clark Pest Control come out and inject an insectacide into the ground around each of my trees (I have 4 red oaks that were driving me nuts with all the sap). I used their service for two years and it worked well (no more sap), but was pricey (about $80/tree). Last year my neighbor turned me onto a product they sell at Home Depot and Lowe's. It is an insecticide made by Bayer that you mix yourself ans spread around the base of the tree. I was skeptical but I tried it last year and to my amazement it worked just as well as the pricey Clark service. THe Bayer is about $20/bottle and one bottle will treat one tree. Its probably not too late but ideally you want to apply in late witer (early March) before the leaves come out on the trees since. It takes some time to work through the root system and into the tree.

Good post, that's exactly what we used. OK, we didn't, a neighbor treated our trees as well as most of them within a three/four house radius of his as a good neighbor deed. It works really, really well.

I used diazinon and it also solved the problem. I just sprayed the trunk...about three feet wide...all the way around and it kept the ants and other bugs away and solved our problem.

I just treated my roses with that Bayer stuff last week, and the aphids are all deceased now.
I've also heard that a preventive measure on those big trees is to power spray the undersides of the leaves. Soap and water!

That will definately kill the aphids that are currently on the tree, but will do nothing to keep new ones from coming back in short time. Its also messy and assumes you own a pressure washer. The Bayer only takes about 10 minutes to apply and lasts all year...
