I thought I'd start a new thread because we had a little discussion about GF stuff going on in the Favorite treats thread.

I figured it might be cool to have a place to put product recommendations, restaurant info, recipes and whatever else.

So if you, a friend or a family member are gluten-free, what's going on in your GF life? Do you have some favorite GF products you want to recommend? What products are you trying to find a replacement for? (Someone might have a recipe or a product they can recommend.) What restaurants do you like to go to for GF food? Or whatever else you want to talk about. (Frustrations? Questions?)

A few of my favorite products are -

Ener-G Wheat Free Crackers. These kind of remind me of Carr's Water Crackers. A good cracker that stays in one piece. It has a good neutral flavor that you can use for anything.

Pamela's Wheat-Free Bread Mix. Awesome bread. It actually bends. It doesn't fall apart or crumble. I use this for everything from sandwiches to french toast. It's has a wheat bread kind of flavor and texture (rather than white wheat bread like Wonder). It's also pretty neutral in flavor unlike a lot of GF bread. So it tastes just as good as a PB&J as it does as a grilled cheese or turkey sandwich.

Kinnikinnick Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (like Oreos). Elliott's has these. Don't buy them all because I'm addicted. These are fantastic.

Kinnikinnick Cinnamon Donuts. Elliott's has these in one of the freezers next to their back office. Bottom shelf. In a box. They're dense. Like a heavy cake donut. But they're good. They've also got Vanilla Icing Glazed, but I haven't tried those.

.........

Oh, also, RICE CHEX are now gluten-free. General Mills did it right too. They went all the way to the growers to make sure the crops weren't cross contaminated, the transport trucks, the machinery and warehouses were GF. Everything.

It's so nice to have a normal GF cereal that isn't a kids cereal or a health food cereal.

Well, that's all from me right now. I hope this thread gets some activity. If not, I'll just pop it back up every once in a while.

My daughter just recently went gluten free and she likes the GF menu at Pei Wei and PF Chang's.

Pamela's Wheat-Free Bread Mix.

I'll tell her about this bread. A Dr just told her to try a gluten free diet and after several weeks she felt so much better. Her friends were all eating pizza so she tried a slice just to see what happened. It made her sooo sick. So now the dr is starting all the allergy tests.

Not the most healthiest choice but apparently In and Out is supposed to be very good about serving food to folks with wheat allergies. My little sister was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease and I was surprised that she could eat there. I believe this is about the only fast food restaurant she can eat at. They must keep their wheat products (buns, etc.) separate from the other food/food prep areas and can serve their hamburgers without the bun (protein-style). Also, they only serve fries not onion rings so there is no wheat contamination there. She just tells the person taking her order that she has a wheat allergy and they type it on the ticket so everyone is aware while preparing her food. She likes to shop at Trader Joe's as well. She lives in the San Diego area so I'm guessing she has more specialty store choices there than we do here. Any yummy recipes would be much appreciated. I can pass them along to her (and for myself as well :-). Thanks.

Double-double protein animal style!

I have only been there once and it was several months ago, but I believe the "Ugly Mug" offered some gluten free breads with their sandwiches.

Just wanted to let the local GF p eople who may not have heard the news that Corn Chex are being reformulated to be gluten free. The only place I've seen them so far is Winco. Not that I drove to every store in town looking for the GF chocolate or cinnamon chex that they are reformulating. Ahem... They are also in the process of making Strawberry and Honey Nut Chex GF too. General Mills says to look for an obvious gluten free statement on the front or on the side panel just like Rice Chex had when it was first GF.

ALSO...

Betty Crocker. Yes, THE Betty Crocker is coming out with a line of gluten free mixes. - Go take a look at this lucky blogger who received some advance samples. They say that they expect to start rolling them out in the stores in June or so. http://killthegluten.blogspot.com/

I've also heard that Steve"s Pizza has gluten free pizza. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't vouch for the taste/texture, etc. But just wanted to let people know. I'd maybe give them a call ahead of time and do the gluten pop quiz before you plan your day around it. smile.gif

So lots of cool stuff coming up!! I've already eaten one box of GF Corn Chex, which were always one of my most favorite pre-GF cereals anyway. They totally taste the same as they always did. Apparently they just started using brown sugar syrup instead of barley malt in their recipe. Which sounds like a better flavor anyway.

Well, I hope this helps the local GF people. Pass the information on to your GF family and friends. smile.gif

Hi Nancy....we buy all of our Kinnickinnick from the Raley's at Blue Ravine/ Green Valley. They keep a ton of stuff in the freezer in the back. Ask the natural foods manager, Richard, and he'll tell you everything they carry in the back.
