I'm moving to the area next month, and am curious: Who provides your internet?

We don't want TV or phone - just internet service. Preliminary searching indicates Comcast cable internet is our only option.

According to AT &T, DSL isn't available in the neighborhood, but they've lied to me before about that. Seriously, after being told AT&T DSL wasn't available, we literally had a salesman knock on our door and offer us AT&T... you'd think they'd get their records straight to make sales, doncha? blink.gif

Comcast.

We've had them here and at our old place in Broadstone. Its very fast and outages have been infrequent. Using Vonage for phone and it works well with Comcast.

I hate comcast. I've always used ATT.

As you can tell from my above post I am unhappy with ATT.

For last year I've experienced bad service and poor quality.

I'm now with Comcast (who I hate ALMOST as much as Mylo, yes I sold out two weeks ago).

They are awesome. Best customer service they have ever had.

I had ATT DSL since I moved to Folsom. I had it at my house on Big Valley. I switched to UVERSE internet when that came in. I'm happy with the UVERSE TV, but the internet (for $25 a month) isn't worth it. I want to go back to DSL ($15 a month) but I just checked their website and they said it wasn't available at my address (although a couple of weeks ago it was) . I'm thinking they trying very hard to not give me options so that I don't switch to cheaper service or move from UVERSE.

As far as comcast goes I won't get that (but it is available). I don't like it because they limit how much data you can consume per month (and charge you more if you go over). Of course ATT is trying out the same thing in select markets so it looks like your screwed either way. I think internet only with comcast is a rip off. If you get their TV service it is better.

Also I saw something interesting. ATT was offering DSL w/o phone service. Which means I guess you don't have to have basic phone service to get internet. Not sure what the details were on that, but it looked cool because I don't use my home phone but had it installed for the DSL.

BTW was the ATT sales guy selling UVERSE? Was his name Russ, that was the guy that came to my house and told me that yes indeed they had fiber to the premise (liar). BTW it would be cool if Surewest was out here (for internet at least) but they are not (at least in our neighborhood).

If you can get U-Verse.. GET IT! Hands down.

If you can't, get DSL

If you can't, get a modem

If you can't afford a $5 modem, get Comcast.

The difference between my $25 UVERSE internet and my old $12.99 DSL is not much. Not enough to justify the cost (IMO). Downloading torrents, watching netflix and just searching the internet doesn't seem different with UVERSE (at least at my level of speed). The one cool thing with UVERSE is getting the 2wire router and the ability to get ethernet ports at all of my TV receivers.

The one good thing with UVERSE is the TV finally has stopped glitching thank-god. And the whole house DVR is cool, but cooler is the ability to record up to 4 shows at once. Also I got three receivers for free which is cool.

BTW whats up with ATT not showing any internet options if you have UVERSE? Is it a ploy to keep you away from their lower cost non UVERSE internet?

I'll be on the other side of the neighborhood, at East Natoma and Hancock.

Comcast seems to be our only option. I was hoping to avoid that company for net neutrality issues. Ah well... Surely someday, some glorious competitor will arise to champion unlimited bandwidth and content-neutral ISPs! *gazes longingly at the future*

I will agree, I've never had complaints about Comcast's customer service... and I've had a whole host of complaints about AT&T's customer service.

But then again I've had complaints about Comcast's spotty internet connection, which is really the service I'm paying for, so I guess I'd rather have a solid product than good customer service.

Well I was going to tell you not to hold your breath on that one but I guess Obama is committed to the idea as well. I saw some article in my ACM newsletter, but here is a link on the Obama/Biden election site: http://www.barackoba...ues/technology/

On another note I'm switching back to DSL (from UVERSE). The ATT website says I can't get it, but I'm going to call them and switch back to the $14.99 service. I had DSL when I first moved into my house not sure why they say I can't get it anymore.

Obama transition team includes two pro-Net Neutrality advocates on the FCC review team:

wired.com: Net Neutrality Advocates In Charge Of Obama Team Review of FCC
http://blog.wired.co...neutrality.html

Susan Crawford, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, and Kevin Werbach, a former FCC staffer, organizer of the annual tech conference Supernova, and a Wharton professor, will lead the Obama-Biden transition team's review of the FCC.

Both are highly-regarded outside-the-Beltway experts in telecom policy, and they've both been pretty harsh critics of the Bush administration's telecom policies in the past year.

---

I'm very happy to see this one. The Pro-monopoly FCC under the Bush Administration has been a disgrace and afront to technological progress.

Wow, that is great news! Thanks for sharing!

It's nice to see we might actually have some experts with the power to make policy decisions regarding that good ol' "series of tubes." lmaosmiley.gif
