I kept losing internet access, then getting slow connections, then losing access completely again.
The lights on the Comcast modem were going out and then staying solid, then going back to normal flashing.
As I was checking settings on my PC, I noticed the IP address switched to a private 192.168.x address for a while when I plugged my computer directly into the Comcast modem and it worked for browsing the web again.
It looks like Comcast is experimenting with doling out private IP addresses.
It later switched back to a public IP address and is working through my router again.
Are you still going to be able to use your home routers to share internet access in your home if Comcast starts giving out private IP adresses permanently?

Same exact thing happened to me. I took my modem down and got a new one. Everything was working fabulous last night. This morning the modem needed a reset but it's been fine since. Not sure what's going on behind the scenes but I'm sure it's for the better of mankind.
I thought the days of static IP were over. I had DSL a few years ago and they gave out 2 static IPs which was unheard of. Your router will assign the PCs an IP as you only get one from Comcast anyways.

You should be fine, you might have to change your router to a different subnet but it should allow you to pass through. Best guess is that if you had rebooted your router last night, it probably would have picked up a new 192.168.X.X IP for the WAN side.

You actually should have a private IP on your computer and not a routable IP. If you are getting a routable address, you may want to invest in a firewall.

I have a firewall already. Normally your home router/firewall gets a routable IP from your cable modem and then the router gives your PC a private IP. I was getting a private IP from the cable modem for a few minutes today and it was working.
I just plugged the computer into the cable modem directly for a few minutes as a troubleshooting test to see if the problem was caused by the home router or the Comcast modem connection.

aaghhh....I follow you now.
But yes, even if they do dole out private IP's, everything will still work the same. Just your routable address will come from further up the line.

Comcast was down in our area (Prairie Oaks) from 7:20 - 9:56 PM. I called them twice and they said they were working on the problem. Missed Survivor tonight so will have to watch it on ON DEMAND tomorrow.

Mine was down around 6ish. However, I haven't been working from home lately so I haven't been keeping track of the daily outages.
