Kitchen Nightmares...

It's disturbing watching it and seeing how people (chefs/owners/restaurant mangers) don't take care of anything in regards to cleaning the kitchen. Last week the owner said he noticed the cockroaches but didn't know what to do about 'em. Makes me scared going out to eat sometimes.

I guess you could just stay home and eat every night then...

I've worked in restaurants many many years and so has my husband and some of those things don't seem too far-fetched. We watch it religiously every week and it reconfirms why homecooked meals are the best!!! One day, my husband and I will open a restaurant that is actually CLEAN!!!

yes some owners really are that dense. the restaurant biz is no easy task - cooking is only one aspect of it - the rest is a logistics nightmare... I have the utmost respect for people who give the biz a go of it but I know more then 50% do not know how to do it right...
Ramsey's show is fantastic, that guy really knows the exact right formula for successful restaurants and its amazing how he can turn these places around

the BBC version is much more brutal and I love it - I really enjoy all of Ramsay's shows including the ones where he does normal cooking shows - its like he's a completely different person - very mellow....
that guy is probably one of the best restaurateurs in the entire world - he's amazing with what he can do

Re: Kitchen Nightmares, most of it is set up. The cockroaches were obviously all rounded up for that shot, like they were everywhere crawling over plates, etc.
That's not to say they're not there, but they exaggerate everything for the cameras.
Re: restaurants being gross; this is where judgement comes in. I always say you can tell the quality of a restaurant by it's bathroom. If that's gross, the owners obviously don't care, and your food quality and health will reflect that same attitude. Just look at these places, they're disgusting throughout.

My husband is very even tempered but one thing will make him angrier than any and that's his staff not keeping the kitchen clean. He insists on everything being clean and sanitary. Is it perfect? No but neither are most home kitchens. The vast majority of food borne illness happens in a home kitchen.
Those reality shows are staged and then edited for maximum shock value.

Oh, agreed, and I believe I heard an interview with him, or a recap of an interview, where Chef admitted it. He admitted that he is more over the top for the TV.
Dave: Really? You think the BBC version is more brutal? I've been enjoying it because I thought it was less brutal, but maybe it's just all the accents. I will admit, that's the reason I love it so much... English, French, Scottish, Irish.. I'm just in an accent heaven there.

I was sad, however, that Gordon didn't come out and yell at me

I hope he opens his own restaurant and gets a green card....
Also, when you pay in cash, the IRS doesn't get its share...just sayin'
The server was an emotional wreck and I wondered what mummy and daddy issues he had to be treated like that...Not to mention his complete incompetence to even just sit customers to a table...
His sons were lazy and incompetent as well.
The father should be closed down for bad Karma..Anyone who treats his staff the way he did doesn't deserve a restaurant...Also, he will have a heart attack soon unless he can let his anger go....
The owner seemed impervious on hiring workers who actually knew how to do their job title...The server was unprofessional to say the least...
AND facial hair on cooks....gross, someone say hair net...
Just disgusted that these owners have such ego....Too bad ego doesn't taste good...than they would have a chance in hell of staying open...

It was brutal and odd the owner didnt know the reason the place was suffering was because the FOOD was HORRIBLE! He also needed to replace his anger\frustration with some cajones and get his manager\host (wasnt a server) to manage or better yet, go away.
The cook apparently can cook but is lazy (slow\sloppy food service, doesn't step to ensure kitchen clean, order fresh produce), unable to communicate with servers or owner and stubborn (doesn't acknowledge requests, orders etc).
