My hard drive is almost dead and I am looking at repairing my computer or buying a new tower to replace the old one. I'm torn because it's seven years old.

I'm not very educated in the workings of a computer, so a little hesitant to take it to just any computer repair shop. And I don't know if it would be less to repair it.

Could someone recommend a computer repair shop to me or tell me where NOT to go?

Thanks in advance for your trouble. smile.gif

I've had excellent service and great advice at reasonable rates from KSI Computers -- now located in the same shopping center as Big 5. Micah is an angel.

Spend $500 and get a new Dell. A 7yo PC isn't worth putting any more money into.

All I have to say is that I hope you have your hard drive backed up to another disk drive...

Thanks everyone, for your input.

Maybe simpler to just go buy a new tower and not have any surprises with repairs. rolleyes.gif

I've had this baby for seven years without any problems...it's a HP Pentium 4 Pavilion. It has the CD writer which I have enjoyed, so I'd want the same sort of computer. My monitor is still good so I'd only be buying the tower. It might be the best solution.

I guess THAT will be my Christmas present to myself! Isn't the timing great!?!?

Thanks again everyone. smile.gif

Getting a new PC is the best choice. Take this 7 yr old PC and backup the data then add a new HDD for use as a server or second system. You can also donate it to a school, senior center or non-profit but remove the HDD because it is failing and once your data is backed up, smash the HDD with a sledgehammer or use a power drill to make several perpendicular holds through the platters to destroy the drive. Use eye protection because things will fly if not contained.

Lot of great deals on PCs these days. Check out http://www.Bensbargains.com, http://www.slickdeals.net, http://www.techbargains.com, http://www.gotapex.com to name a few bargain sites that list PC deals and coupons.

Dell Core 2 Duo mini tower with 20" LCD for $389. $899 for a Dell C2D with HD 24" LCD. HP Pavillion Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, Blu Ray disc, 256MB GeForce 9300 video for $637 and free shipping directly from HP! HP site will also allow you to upgrade almost anything if you want even more horsepower. This price is w\o monitor but those can be added to the cart (19-24' LCDs are affordable and much nicer than old CRTs or LCDs).

ditto, my friend started encountering problems, he decided to back up his harddrive, but it was too late, he only saved about 25% of what he wanted before the harddrive completely gave up. It went quick from symptoms to death. He's bummed.
I would rather be Backpacking

If you think it is just your hard drive, why not buy just that part? No need for a whole new tower. Installing a PC component is much easier now than it was in the 80's, I think pretty much anyone can do it.

I'm just ribbing Dave, who's my friend. What's your problem?

I can't speak for the other guy.
