If there are fewer students at Oak Chan, why would they still need the same number of teachers? That does not make sense.
In light of this budget, FCUSD should/will maximize EVERY single classroom capacity...if a class can hold 32 at still get state $, I can't see them putting less than 32 in that class. If Oak Chan's population is declining, the thing that makes sense is to condense the classes and that would possibly mean that they lose a teacher here and there as they need 3 3rd grades instead of 4, etc. Those teachers with most seniority would move to other schools in FCUSD and those without enough seniority probably already got their pink slips and are out.
I think you are mistaken if you think there are ANY schools in our district that are NOT facing staffing changes....some teachers have pink slips and those that don't could be moving--either the grade that they had been teaching or schools, depending on how FCUSD decides they can utilize them best.

In OC's case, 24:1 in grades 1 & 2 plus other factors has necessitated OC to reducing their staff by 3 FTE's. Thus, the 3 teachers with the least amount of seniority at OC will be reassigned to other schools, or what is called 'surplussed.' Those teachers to my knowledge at this time are Mr. Oliver, Mr. McCarthy, & Mrs. Itkoff.

You are obviously not a first or second grade teacher - try teaching 32 5 year olds to read.

I am not in any way advocating the abolition of CSR. In fact, I spent hours (probably in the range of 40-50 hours organizing, sending emails, making flyers, and coordinating efforts among elementary schools) trying to fight for the preservation of 3rd grade CSR. And, clearly my efforts and the efforts of many others fell short.
With this post I was simply pointing out that with the budget as dire as it is, cuts are indeed coming and while I wish it were different, FCUSD is going to max out its class sizes in every way it can. I am confident that they will go right up to the letter of the law. It looks like they are now taking 1st and 2nd grade to 24 students. I wish it were 20...I have researched CSR and I believe in it. I am also a realist, though, and I was just pointing out to the OP that cuts are coming to every school in FCUSD and so yes, staffing changes are imminent.

Are there any other districts in the area going back to 32? The district where I grew up isn't evening thinking about taking away CSR!!!
That's a lot of changes without the change in class size! YIKES!!!

Yes, I agree that this situation is scary. It was challenging enough to fight for CSR while school was in session and parents were around to make their voices heard. I fear that many tough decisions will be made while most families are away and unable to comment. I hope FCUSD has the good sense to preserve what CSR we had left (1st and 2nd grades) and not move those grades to 32. That would be a huge detriment to basic learning...you are right: the 3R's should come before any extras, and at a 32:1 ratio in those early grades many kids are going to be behind in the basics.
