WASHINGTON – An elderly gunman opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, gravely wounding a security guard before being shot. Authorities said they were investigating a white supremacist as the possible shooter.
The assailant was in critical condition, said Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty.
D.C. Police Chief Kathy Lanier said the gunman appeared to have acted alone. He was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle, she said.
The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.
But Lanier told reporters at a hastily convened news conference, "The second he stepped into the building he began firing."
Authorities said they were investigating for any possible connection with terrorism or hate crime.
The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.
Roads surrounding the museum were closed at least temporarily and blocked off with yellow tape. Several police cars and officers on horses surrounded the area.
One law enforcement official said James Von Brunn, a white supremacist, was under investigation in the shooting, and a second official said the elderly man's car was found near the museum and tested for explosives. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Shooting at Holocaust Museum injures guard, suspect
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A lone gunman wounded a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday before being injured by return fire, according to police and a museum statement.
The suspect was identified as James von Brunn, an 88-year-old white supremacist from Maryland, two law enforcement officials told CNN.
Gunfire at the entrance of the museum wounded at least two people Wednesday, emergency officials said.
A private security guard and the shooting suspect were wounded, according to officials of the Washington police.
Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for U.S. Park Police, told reporters a man armed with a "long gun" entered the museum at 12:50 p.m. and fired at a security officer, and both were wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
"My understanding is that two other security officers at the museum returned gunfire at the man that had entered the museum," Schlosser said.

Here's a line from holywesternempire.com "In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal."
Stormfront calls him a 'racialist treasure'.

it sucks that there are people who's entire lives are centered around hate. they should just commit suicide since their lives are not worth living with so much hatred. I'll provide the ammo for free.

Why is it that when a racist does something despicable, someone replies with 'the other side has racists, too', type posts?

I'm not sure what other side you're speaking of. I believe a racist is a racist.

In other words, Wright didn't kill anybody, nor does his racist statement appear to sound very violence-inducing...

As we've been investigating the background of James von Brunn, the suspect in today's shooting at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC., we've learned that he's not some unknown figure on the extreme racist right. He was seen as something of a revered elder.

I'll clarify for you:
Here we have a case where James Von Brunn, an avowed racist who has advocated violence against jews and blacks, who wrote that Hitler's biggest mistake was NOT gassing the jews, who warned that once in office, President Obama would release an army of blacks from prisons, and who wrote that 'millions of low IQ non-whites are encouraged to illegally invade the USA. They are provided sanctuary, jobs, health-care schooling, by those intent upon destroying Western Civilization.... There is sparse time remaining. You must ACT NOW. KILL THE ENEMY OR DIE IN THE GULAG!', walks into the Holocaust Museum and starts shooting, killing at least one man.
Your reaction is to post a link to a quote by Rev. Wright doesn't hear from Obama anymore because 'them Jews won't let me talk to him.'
I just don't find the two equal.

I get the reference of equality that both men are racist, but it's still a stupid relation to bring Wright into this conversation. There's millions of other racists that could have been discussed in this comparison, but Wright was obviously picked to create an Obama/Democrat/Political bend to the thread. IMO, it's just stupid to bring political bickering into this one, although not unexpected behaviour from either side of our childish red v. blue political environment.
