On Wednesday Aug. 26,2009 the Neal's Meals group visited Mooney's restaurant located at 312 East Bidwell Street in Folsom. There were 18 people eating that night. The special was all you can eat baby back ribs! The rib's were falling off the bone. Several people tried the burger's. The group thought it was one of the best burger's ever! The meatloaf portion was so large the fellow could not finish his meal. The Porter house steak was tender, and char broiled. All 18 people gave this new restaurant two thumbs up. Most of the people have already gone back for a second meal.

Very nice review, welcome to the forum.

I've been to Mooney's a few times, they make some pretty good food and their prices are excellent for the quality you're getting. My only issue is the service is low, but for good food, it is sometimes worth the wait. I've heard they have a very good happy hour too.

I have only been a few times, but I have greatly enjoyed the food. But the service was spotty, as there has only been 1 person in charge of the whole floor and bar, each time I've gone.

We have been there about 10 times. Sometimes just my wife and I, sometimes we take our three kids. I have never been disappointed with the food or the service. Denise seems to be a little more hands on and touchy feely than your typical server but hey, she owns the joint. The tacos are good, the burgers and sandwiches are good and she has some awesome micro brews behind the bar..just ask.

Went here for dinner last night on a whim. We wanted something different and a burger sounded good, so tried Mooney's after hearing they had a good one. The food was good, when it finally came. The service was SO SLOW!! She blamed it on 'everyone coming in at once" but this sounds like it is a regular occurrence here. We probably won't go back, unless we have endless time and are not super hungry like we were last night! As a previous poster mentioned, only one server running the floor and she said only one in the kitchen. She didn't even check on us after our food came, and my husband was almost finished with his when she did come back and finally got his ketchup for his fries! I understand they probably want to save money on servers, but this situation probably loses more in revenue then paying at least one server! It's too bad, because I would much rather see "mom & pop" type restaurants survive and the chains die.

We tried it a couple weeks ago using a restaurant.com gift certificate. The food was great. Service was slow. But, we were not in a rush so that didn't matter. A jazz band was setting up when we were there. Our kids LOVED their chicken tenders and it was quite a big portion. I had the meatloaf which was a huge serving and could of fed 2-3 people. My husband had the angel hair pasta with shrimp which he enjoyed. We will definitely go back again and we are looking forward to trying out the happy hour. I hear they have karaoke on Friday nights too.

I have been going out to 10 different Folsom restaurants over 10 consecutive Saturdays for the past few years with a buddy during basketball season. We went to Mooneys two weeks ago and had a similar experience as most others on this forum, even though there was only us and one other party in the restaurant.

Both of us were stuck on deciding between the same two burgers so we decided to split them both. We asked the waiter, with the personality of a bar stool, to cut each burger in half and give us each half of both burgers. He claimed he understood. After waiting for about 30 minutes, we asked him to at least give us the fries while they are killing the cows. He said that would be fine and it only took him 15 minutes to come back with them. They were on one plate for the two of us (I figured we'd each get our own).

Some time after we finished our fries, the burgers came. Of course they were not cut so we did so ourselves.

On the bright side, the burgers were indeed some of the best I have had in Folsom. The meat was very tasty and there were plenty of jalapenos and mushrooms on the two burgers we ordered.

In spite of the quality of food, due to the lack of service, I would definitely not recommend this place and I will not likely return.

I'll add my two cents here but sounds like other had similar experiences. I'd planned on going to Manderes on Friday night but got there too late and it was packed. Headed over to Mooney's and from second we stepped in the door, the service was atrocious.

We walked in, apparently passed right by one of the owners who did say "hi" but took no action to welcome us, ask if we new there, etc. We took a seat at one of the bar tables and she finally meandered over two minutes later. We placed our orders (two glasses of wine and one margarita) and an order of regular chips and one blue chips.

The drinks came relatively quick; the chips not so much (maybe 20 minutes -- I understand they're homemade but it doesn't take 20 minutes to slice and fry potatoes). When they finally came, it was an order of spicy chips and one blue cheese. When asked, the waitress/owner looked and said "yeah, those are spicy..." without any acknowledgement that they were incorrect.

To make matters worse, the second waitress/owner came by, pointed at my wine glass and asked "what are you having?" I told her and she proceeded to take my glass and set it on the bar where it sat for 15 minutes until I finally got up and asked if I could have it back. She refilled it and I went back to my seat. Funny thing is, she never asked if I wanted another glass, yet it appeared on the bill.

When the check finally comes a credit card is inserted and placed on the end of the table. After 5 more minutes, we stand up the folder. After 5 more minutes, I grabbed it and start waving it to get some attention. Meanwhile, both waitresses are milling about, refilling condiments, etc. We weren't at a table in some far-off corner; we were in plain sight. Finally, I got up and handed her the check in complete frustration having now had the check for about 15 minutes.

My bottom line is that regardless how good the food might be, without some professional wait staff, I'll never be going back. Being a good waiter takes skill and I saw no evidence of that on Friday I'm sorry to say.

Sad to hear. I've heard similar bad service stories from others who have been there.

On the 'restaurant watch list' thread, someone was lamenting the fact that when a restaurant closes, it means more people losing their jobs.

I'd argue that quite often, it's because these people aren't doing their jobs which causes the lack of business which causes the closing of the place.

I haven't been in there, but called one night a couple of months ago when I saw a sign outside advertising 'live jazz' on Tuesdays. I love jazz and so does my wife and some of my friends. We would love to have a local place to come and listen.

I called to get more information, such as start and stop times, full band or a single player, if dinner would still be served, cover charge, etc. In other words, I wanted to be a customer and spend my money there and wanted to know what to expect.

The guy who answered the was very abrupt with me, seemed like he didn't want to answer any questions, and was rude.

So, I haven't been there, but it sounds like I am not missing much.

In contrast, I went to the Karma Cafe the other night. The owner was very nice and friendly, told me the food was great, and he had live jazz there. We hung out for an hour and had a great experience.

I wonder if the owners of Mooney's read myfolsom. I wonder if they'd care. I wonder if they'll be on the list soon.

People need to realize it's not about the food. We can eat food at home. It's all about the experience.

My husband and I went there for breakfast several months ago and we found the service underwhelming at best. Example: sugar, cream and spoon came 5 minutes after the coffee. My eggs came out several minutes before my husbands breakfast. The worst part was that we were one of two couples in the restaurant. There were two people at the bar who seemed to be friends of the owner. From the conversation that I tried not to listen to, I got the impression that the owner thinks of Mooney's as a bar that serves food, not a restaurant that serves drinks.

It's really unfortunate because the service at Bailies used to be so phenomenal. Anyone remember Aaron the bartender? It was a sad day for Folsom when he got a real job. smile.gif

Um yeah, that wasn't the "meat" of their post but rather the quality of service.

Five of us went to Mooney's on Sunday for breakfast. All of us enjoyed it -- even the pickier ones. The food was great and in large quantities. I do wish they didn't use those little jelly packets--but that is minor. The country potatoes were really good. However, some people may not like the spices that were in them that early in the morning--but we did. You can always get the shredded hash browns. You have your choice of toast or a "1/2 order" of biscuits and gravy. Two in our party chose the bisquits and gravy. In my opinion they were a full order. From my stolen bite , they were also very good. We all enjoyed our omelets as well.
It must have been Denise who served us. (Since it appears the place is named after her dog.) She's a kick in the pants! She was very personable and served us well. She knew from the beginning that we had coupons and that didn't lessen her service or personality one bit. In fact, she extended a discount to one person in our party where she didn't have to do so.

We'll be back.
