As I was checking out in Walmart today I was told by the clerk that they were going green. As of Oct 24th they will no longer carry plastic bags in the Folsom Walmart. They were offering cloth bags for 15 cents each which are not like the normal ones we buy for $1. These looked like the platics bags but a little smaller. I asked if all Walmart's were doing this and they said not currently. I think they are testing the waters in Folsom. smile.gif

I think it is a good idea, but there are going to be some very upset customers who arent prepared for this. Thoughts anyone?

I think it's a great idea! I also believe rather than receiving a $.05 credit for each bag I bring to the grocery store, I should be charged $.05 if I don't bring them. Bringing my own bag(s) to the grocery store is a relatively painless way to reduce waste.

You buy cloth bags from them and re-use them. They are .15 each. They hold more than the plastic bags and are really durable. I guess if you don't bring yours and don't want to buy them you just dump it all in the cart in no bags.

Plastic is deadly to wildlife and the major cause of a huge garbage patch bigger than the State of Texas floating in the ocean between SF and Hawaii. For more info:

I bought a 5 x shirt for walmart and will just grab the bottom with 2 hands and make a shirt basket at the checkstand.

i am still not getting it.....so walmart is pretty much saying "we are no longer providing you with a bag to carry out the merchandise, that you just spent a lot of money on at our store, and instead you have to give us more money to buy a bag if you want one"??????

and since i am sure that the cost of the bags they have used forever has been factored into the cost of said merchandise, i should be expecting to see that savings (from walmart not paying to buy/make those bags anymore) reflected in lower prices throughout the store?????

i am completely for anyone that WANTS to buy green bags or even bring their own....but to say to everyone, sorry you HAVE no choice, we don't do bags, you need to buy them.....i'll miss ya walmart.....

I understand the whole preserve nature thing and stuff, but what is my master supposed to put my dog poop in. My master saves the plastic bags to put to other use, one of which is to put poop in , tie up shut, before tossing it in the garbage. We all know poop is biodegradeable, but the directions on green waste specifically say not to put animal poop into it.

They make biodegradable doggie poop bags for about 5˘ a bag. And now that CVS is offering a 25˘ discount if you bring in a reusable bag, you can come out ahead!

Hey Normajean,

I don’t see it that way at all. I believe that for once Walmart is ahead of the curve and saying: Let’s reduce waste, litter, conserve resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But that's just me, I'm a “cup half-full” kinda gal anyway.

I'm sorry but I don't get your math. If my master used bags he got more or less for free, and now is paying 5 cents a bag, unless he buys only 4 bags, he's probably spent more like a buck for 20 bags or something like that, so he's still paying more than he used to.

How can he possibly come out ahead?

Because for every reusable bag you use at CVS you get 25 cents (credit), which could buy you 5 biodegradable bags, instead of 1 free plastic bag?

You presume my master will shop at CVS that much? I think he's been there once, and he didn't even go in, just let his wife run in to get something she had a CVS coupon for.

So your math still doesn't add up unless he can buy 5 or less nickel doggie poop bags and get his 25 cents for using his re-useable bag everytime, and then it's still a loss if he has to drive there once a month just to buy biodegradeable doggie poop bags.

The city of San Francisco outlawed the use of plastic bags in 2007, the San Jose City Council voted this past September to outlaw the use of most plastic and paper bags starting in 2011, and LA is banning plastic bags beginning in 2010. Many other municipalities have talked about passing similar legislation or have banned them already. Most stores are encouraging the use of reusable bags, which is really a good idea.

Now that's committment and long range future planning, glad to see LA will ban plastic bags a 101 years from now. biggrin.gif
