nefarious beliefs of the rampant indigenous locals (sacramento drivers)
re-tell watercooler office jokes involving the fat guy and global warming. (phew)
object to goat roping elected officials into decision making on the ecomonic impact of quartering giant butterflies in an eco friendly bubble....... (Unqualified decision processing of elected officials)
And OTHER IMPORTANT POLITICALLY MOTIVATED CONVERSATIONS!!!!!!
The worse part of all?
New Years is upon us---All my bad habits are on hold--while I try to stop (this year for sure) and my ONE bad vice? Watching the politics threads unfold into tantalizing threads and sub threads of un-predictable directions---so much fun to watch......
I can't survive the day after New Years Resolutions without the politics thread!!!!!!
I need it...It's like the twin to my coffee in the morning.
Give me politics or give me death!!!!!
uhhhh hmmmm---ok-rant over--thank you for listening. For those of you who may have other non political rants you wish to throw out there--feel free to do so....
It is actually good for the soul....Chicken Soup for the something er other said so--I think....

me thinks one may be jumping to conclusions as to how soon john will turn politics back on.
Yes, I want them back.
No, I don't think john will turn them back on the exact day one month after turning them off.
I know I'm not holding my breath, just keeping my fingers crossed.

Is that all the people who did post in politics...always went into other threads afterwards and their moods and stuff could always be "felt"---like how often did you see Camay post a joke after having a discussion about Navy stuff? (I love the joke thread)
So totally meant that line above-->I need it...It's like the twin to my coffee in the morning.
It should be a famous quote or something for the MYFolsom Site!!!

--Mods - if this is wandering too dangerously into politics, feel free to delete and let me know. I'm hoping that this doesn't turn into (like the burn day) a thread about politics - but I do have a sincere question about this. --
I have always wondered...
Why do you like discussing politics on a forum? And how do you have a non-confrontational (or dare I even say respectful) discussion about politics???
I have opinions, and frankly, I get pretty passionate about them. When I read the politics thread I get upset. Literally. My blood temp goes up, I get aggravated and feel a physical change come over me. I actually like somebody less when they reveal an opinion or a political leaning that I intensely disagree with. I don't like that feeling, so I don't expose myself to opinions/viewpoints that cause it.
Before anyone tells me I'm an idiot - just FYI - it's not a quality in myself that I like.

I'm curious - how do others think about it? Do you have the same reactions? Do you like that feeling? Why do you think politics is your twin, as Supermom put it.

As much as I agree, I don't think that some people know how to live without that confrontation in their lives.
I, for one couldn't care less if the politics section ever comes back.

It's the twin to the coffee I enjoy and partake in--every morning.
I love debate. I love spirited comedy, thoughtful analysis, emotional diatribes and sobering factual census stuff.
But more importantly, I love politics because it opens up a person to you--in a way that ordinarily you wouldn't see.
For instance---If I were to say all murders should go to a desert island and be abandoned there to die a horrific, starving death (which I have said before) and then someone were to PM me and tell me that they think I'm a heartless B*** and they hope I die a long suffering death (which was exactly someone's response to that comment)---well, I learned that person felt very strongly that murderers should be given a second chance (yeah, right) I thought a few other things that I felt very wise in keeping to myself--like: this person isn't gonna last on this site for very long. Any they didn't.
And then there are the people who truly do add depth to my day.
Like the person who irritates most of the sites (straight and narrow lace tight) crowd, by challenging the norms. Absolutely infuriating. Yet, thought provoking. I don't get mad. Just kinda wonder when that poster will learn a bit more subtlety. He's still young, yet.
Then there's the school and city council representatives that occasionally show up and offer a different point of view. Or the computer guru. Or the novelist. Or the mechanic or the landscaper, or the handiman or the attorney, insurance man or the realestate broker. We have 'em all.
With that many different people in the world--their ideas are gonna be different than mine. Some I respect. Some I tolerate. Some I can't imagine being them. Some I hope I don't ever meet.
But I have learned to read, argue and rarely get offended anymore--by posts. unless you directly attack me.
thinkoutloud--just read for a few months. get used to the people's humor and history--then you might get an insight into a person-that you may not have seen, before.
Like why a single woman is suddenly B*** about certain subjects. why a guy is constantly on guard as soon as "city managers" is mentioned. Why one guy is very emotional about the navy. Why one person here--secretly hates army war stuff being put on this site while her nephew is away. Why one person never posts about religion anymore. and another guy only posts about anti-government stuff.
Lots of people--lots of agendas. Get to know them. Its hard to get mad-then....

my answer is pretty darn close to yours below..
my guess is folks like to discuss politics online because they won't or don't do it in person out of fear of alienating co-workers and friends

Yes, thank you.
But that other posters have said that politics section doesn't matter because no one has ever changed their mind about a political thing on here is not true.
People here have PM's me before and said I didn't get what you were saying at first.
Yo made me mad, or or uncomfortable. then I thought about it. Now I get what your saying. I agree with you. I just wouldn't have the guts to say it on this site because people are attacking you.
I have gotten a PM like that about 3 times.
And I have learned, grown and changed my viewpoints while reading and activley or even inactively read lots of different posts on this site. Some not even in the political section.
Actually, the most heated debates I have ever seen were in the parents thread and one of the neighborhood threads. one about a bike race, and one about a teen driver on Ironpoint.
Oh, and one on the pet threads. About a cat. remeber that? Take away the presidential bashing threads and the politics threads have been pretty mild over the last few months....

I'm with you there. I'm INCREDIBLY passionate about my beliefs or as some would consider the lack thereof. I'm a devout atheist and a VERY liberal democrat. Does that make me right or wrong? No, it make me ME. I choose normally to keep those facts to myself because I don't care for it to color the other discussions we might have.
I have friends who are devoutly religious and republican. Do I understand it? No. I can't even begin to comprehend how someone could think that way but it doesn't mean their opinions don't matter. I'd just prefer that when I'm talking about electricians that the fact that they are christian or republican not come up. I care about what kind of electrician they are, not what their religion or political leanings are.
There are so many things about the world and about Folsom that we can talk about WITHOUT religion or politics being involved. Let's give it a shot, shall we?

Wow Chef--You cooked that one up--perfectly. I agree 100% !!!!!!!
Leave the politics and religion outta the parents, pets, neighborhoods, and classifieds threads.....
Politics should only be in the politics thread.
You are 100% right. Now if only everyone else could understand that.....
like the guy who likes to call kids monsters and brats while talking about their teachers---who would've thought that a parent would be the first to call their kid a brat?--sorry, I digress.
But, the statement wasn't political in nature. at all. Merely slightly attuning out of the ones whom don't want to hear it--and cliquing--those who are the favored few and can hold a conversation and but out the rest of the people or complain to the mods that the thread isn't going the way they wanted.
That is the real issue with threads. People think that if they can say something on a thread then they own that thread. And only what they agree with--should be on that thread.
But we all know that is not reallity. We all know that Benjamin Franklin said the greatest constructionists of the the American dream was built on the back of discourse.

I think we should all get used to the idea that this forum is a commercial endeavor where money can be made from advertising. I was thinking this was a community forum, set up to be a service to the community....but it's not. It's a forum set up to make money.
Since I know how this type of forum works, like I know how any type of business works, I know that what is said here will always be up to critical review by the advertisers. And any time their ads are withdrawal or there is a possibility they will be, we will be warned and new measures will go into effect to control what is said here.
Not liking to be told what I can, and can not say, I doubt there will be a political forum here in the future that appeals to me. When one can in any way, take offense to what you have posted, there will be those that choose to take offense and that will always be a problem. Moderating being nice in all regards will be difficult if not impossible. I can follow rules. What I can't do is follow some vague idea of what is correct posting and what is not.
And, how anyone can donate their time and energy to anything set up to make a profit, is frankly, beyond my comprehension. But, I guess there are all kinds. I would rather donate my time and energy to a charity for those people who truly need help...not to those who are driven by a profit. I don't know how one can convince others to donate time to a company that is profit driven, but I'd love to find out. And I'd love to have some volunteers working for me!
John....what is your secret?????
I think that we have turned a corner on this forum and doubt it will ever be the way it was before. I sensed that when John appointed an administrator. As far as I know there was never one before, and I wondered what it meant when he appointed one. I guess we are finding out.
