This idea of food pairings and synergy is ready to explode like wildfire in the meainstram media. The research behind it is solid. My personal favorite that I did not know about : Tumeric (which is a super spice for health nuts) + black Pepper.

I'm sorry, but I'm pretty skeptical of this one.

Vodka and OJ makes a great food pairing, but I doubt the germ killing effects of alcohol and the immunity strengthening of Vitamin C multiply, even though it works great for fighting colds for me.

Vodka and OJ was not validated through sound scientific research as was the pairings listed on the link. To each is own I guess, but I guess I am guilty of giving the scientific community the benefit of the doubt. After all, we would'nt have the drugs to cure/alleviate some of the diseases throughout history.

I find it amusing that some people criticizing research may be taking rx to stay alive as a result of research. I am not saying that the scientific community is a 100% right (far from that), BUT if I were a betting man, I would follow their guidlines before I subscribe to some crazy fad/diet/super magic voodoo pill that will cure all my ails.

when it comes to food, the scientific community has flip-flopped too often for me to give a lot of credence to some of these things. I also don't subscribe to the "crazy fad/diet/super magic voodoo pill that will cure all my ails". In fact anything marketed with a heavy dose of "testimonials" I am skeptical of as well. Remember, coca-cola, was first marketed as an "elixir of life", and by joe, it did make people feel a lot better, more energetic, happy, etc. Cocaine will do that to ya. But it's a false sense of well-being, it's called "getting high".
Coffee can do the same thing.

Just for the record, palango's link didn't include a study of vodka and OJ as part of a food pairing, but it did show oatmeal and OJ. I don't think alcohol is really considered a food is it?

I know that wasn't one of the ones listed, but the article (which I did read), talked about how natural pairings that man has come up with show these special benefits. Well, screwdrivers are a natural pairing by mankind as well. Is wine a food? Science talks about the health benefits of wine. So I interpret anything consumed into the stomach, as being a "food". The article even mentioned spices, but one would hardly ever eat just turmeric and black pepper as a food, but in the essence of this article, they treated them the same as OJ & oatmeal, so I think my vodka pairing fits in just fine.

Where in paleolithic nature did cromagnon man find orange juice and oatmeal?

Because that's the last time anything about the human experience made sense.

There is plenty of documented science already that certain foods are better when they are paired with specific other foods. For instance, one can create whole proteins by combining wheat with cheese, beans with grainsand others. Many of these pairings come up in cultural recipes naturally such as hummus, falafal in pita, beans and tortillas, even macaroni and cheese. I don't think it's a coincidence that rice and beans is a common staple in cultures where they don't eat much meat.

Here's a quote I believe in:

"the media are awash with conflicting food studies,"

Tell me, is high fructose corn syrup bad for me?

How about MSG? Is MSG OK, if I only get it from eating seaweed?

How about coffee? Wine? Chocolate?

Which is worse, pure sugar, or sugar substitutes?

How about real butter vs. margarine?

How should I get my starches (aka complex carbohydrates)?
Rice & potatoes only as they are natural, or is Pasta OK? Can I eat bread, or should I eat my wheat grain and barley natural, boil it like rice?

Is Fish better than red meat? Then why all the warnings about heavy metals from eating too much fish? Some religions don't eat pork, that's a historical food combination (or non-combination), should I ban the 2nd white meat from my diet because of that?

So, I remain skeptical of the claims of that article.

I'll stick with the mantra, "everything in moderation", or at least I'll try to. I can't claim to have the perfect diet, I lost my sweet tooth to the animal fat tooth. Give me chicken wings or give me death. laugh.gif
