About 3 months ago my wife and I arrived home after a week long vacation .

Wife: "uhhhh......did you go into the attic ?"
Me: "nope, why ?"
wife: "look up ......."

Me: shocked and confused I see the attic panel is lifted out of place.
I take a broom and nudge the panel back into place and walk away.

wife: "uh, aren't you gonna check it out ?"
me: "no....it's dark up there and the insulation makes me itch."

(In reality I'm a little creeped out about sticking my head up there)

wife: "but what if someone is living up there?"
me: I think "that's why I don't want to stick my head up there!)

I muster up some bravery and eventually climb up there to find .......nobody living in my attic.

Well, it just happened again today for the 2nd time.

The only explanation I can think of is something to do with the air pressure.

has this happened to anyone else?

Only when racoons invaded my living space.

Wanna find out if it is a raccoon? hang something shiny and interesting there.

Wait, I saw this movie!

Paranormal Activity

I think you'll find a picture from your childhood up there.

Raccoons would have to have a way to get into the attic, like a pretty large opening outside, that lead into it.

I don't think that is too common, but could be wrong.

Those attic panels are not light weight and that is due to the fact that the weight keeps them in place if there is a updraft from high winds.

If you find no evidence of raccoons, I'd say you might have a ghost! Or, your wife is playing tricks on you.....

I'd check it every night and keep a log on what the weather is that day. Could be high winds?

Anything else weird going on in your house?

Having lifted MANY attic access panels in my day, I have several thoughts. Firstly, those things are pretty heavy, and it would take a really LARGE pressure change to lift one of those up like that. Second, they are relatively tight fitting, I doubt a raccoon could get his paw onto the side from up above to lift it out. Third, I seriously doubt an animal could lift that panel straight up like that, it would have to grab two opposing edges. My feeling is that only a person could do that. Maybe you could set up a webcam, or temporarily screw it closed.

Good Luck

Jeff

Anyone in your house (e.g., teens) that might be hiding something up there, maybe caught off guard when you come home and can't get the panel on correctly? Me thinks it's time to look up there.

I think we are being scammed...
A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

I guess I should also mention that my wife and I only have 1 kid (14 months old) so the theory of some kids being the culprits is out.

I was home all day by myself when it happened today.

you can set up cameras that only go off when something moves. That's what I would do. Cue the twilight zone music...
