Do they need to be done? Yes, absolutely. The thing that just frosts me is they didn't even give us 24 hours notice!
I, like many people these days, work from home using my computer. I will be losing a whole work day, not to mention will not have heat or hot water all day. If I had known this was going to take place, I would have made other arrangements but I already have my day planned. Gee thanks SMUD.

Wow. Did other neighbors receive the same notice?
I can't afford to lose a day of no PC to work with. My deadlines are impossible as it is!

I KNOW they have to fix the problem, there have been a ton of outages in the last year and a half since we've been here but for pete's sake, give us some notice! By the time the power is back on about 3 or 3:30, everyone I do business with back east will be gone. Guess I'm getting up early tomorrow.

Can you haul your PC to the library or something?

Can you say laptop and coffee at a free wifi site?

Yes, that's an option but it's going to be raining tomorrow and to be honest, I don't want to go sit someplace I lugged my work to. I want to be home where it's warm and relax and work where I can simply reach for a file if I need it.
It's just a total hassle.

I wish... but 1) not with my 2 year old and 2) a laptop doesn't cut it.

We'll miss you during the great empty void from 9:00 to 3:00 or 3:30 tomorrow while you're gone, ChefRaven.

I'm curious, why do you say a laptop doesn't cut it. I'm an electronics engineer and for years, I've used a laptop. In the office, it goes into a docking station so I have a regualr keyboard, mouse, & monitor to use. But when I have to travel, I have everything I have in my office, I just have to deal with the laptop interface. Unless you are using a very highend machine for something, laptops today are equal to normal run of the mill desktops.

I am using a very high end machine.
i7 Quad Core
12GB of DDR3
3TB of HDD space internal, 2TB external
ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard
a higher end graphics card + sound card
Blu-ray burner
and pretty hefty software
and not to mention I need much more monitor space than a laptop can provide. Right now I'm using twin 19" monitors but could easily go bigger.
Otherwise, I agree with what you said for people who don't need a rig like I use.

I sure hope it's more accurate than what the news stations have been reporting about other "smart" meters.

Smart meters, in theory, are pretty damn cool.

In theory yes, but if you're in PG&E territory watch out for them. The bills seem to automatically go up a lot after they are installed.

I have smart meters from both SMUD and PG&E - Neither of my bills has gone up.
