Very SAD show on TV called Hoarders - about obsessive-compulsive stashing of all kinds of "collectibles" and other trash in the house - so much so that the house becomes like a garbage dump.
Have you seen it?

Well change the channel - I think on channel 272 or something there's ANOTHER
show called "American Pickers."
These two guys are buyers for an antique business, and they go all around the country buying up other people's 'junk' and sell it in their shop.

[b]Well, Why not combine those Picker fellas with the Hoarder folks and solve
two problems at once!? Well, DUH!

American Pickers is a lame show. They are trying to play off the success of Pawn Stars which has also gotten pretty much staged but is still more fun to watch than those 2 annoying dopes on American Pickers.

At least Pawn Stars has Chumlee!

Chum used to be cool, until he got all scripted too.

I've only watched one American Pickers, but it seemed like a neat concept. I've always said that if I got laid off I'd do something like that. Scouring Craigslist for deals and flipping picks smile.gif

Hoarders is awesome! I'm a little OCD myself when it comes to Hoarding, but those guys are over the top! I love watching them flip out when you throw out a rusty broken lamp shade. Hilarious! (Yes, I know I'm going to Hell for laughing at other peoples problems, but they're great!)

A couple guys I know scour the ads for "Estate Sales" and the such. They look at the garage and offer a lump sum for the whole deal with the promise that they'll haul the junk and everything with it. They have a permanent space at Denios and what they get with value they sell. Of course they sell most of their stuff to the other spaces at Denios, but it's a pretty lucrative business, if you're into that kinda stuff.

I'm watching a marathon on A&E right now!

One thing all the stories have in common is everyone saying they're holding onto possessions because of either sentimental value, reminders of their past, or a couple people did it because they'd impulsively buy things on sale. One guy kept the old van that his dad had, and an older lady kept things because there had been a house fire in the 80s, so she held onto things even harder as if to replace lost memories. There was even a little kid hanging onto his stuffed animals and toys, saying if he threw something away, it was like losing a part of himself.

The real irony here is...I can relate to almost every word of what they're saying. I think if you love history/your past (like me) it's easier to understand this. As the past slips away a little bit at a time it's really up to us to preserve it for future generations. I love buying 80s and 90s stuff at Goodwill, I know it'll have a good home with me.. The major difference is how CARRIED AWAY these people get with it, to where authorities had to get involved. One chick had to have her kids taken away until she and her husband provided a safe home.

As retro and appreciative of history as I am...I could never imagine being this way! Especially the disarray and dirtiness everywhere. My stuff is very neat and even if things start getting disorganized, I have to go through and start weeding stuff out or at least clean it up. They should've rented storage units or something, lol.
