The World Health Organization has destroyed it's credibility IMHO! They made the H1N1 virus sound like it would be the next Black Death and in fact it was a whole bunch of mostly nothing. Billions of dollars were spent around the world on something that is far more benign than the annual flu bug. They yelled that the "sky is falling" and people believed it. Now if they see another threat, will anyone believe it?

While I am relieved to say H1N1 was less severe than it initially appeared, two things should be noted.

1. This is an opinion piece, not a news story.

2. There is no question that when H1N1 first appeared in Mexico, it was FAR more deadly than regular flu, among a much younger and healthier population. There were many deaths in Mexico. I think the question that remains to be answered is: why did a disease that was so dangerous in Mexico seem to become less dangerous as it spread around the globe? I don't know the answer, but I wonder if maybe it mutated to a milder form as the weeks passed.

The initial death report in Mexico was huge and then it changed and kept going down when they did the real testing.

Swine Flu, West Nile, Bird Flu, SARS...it seems every year there is a potentially new deadly disease that makes the news for a while and gets people all hyped up.

Meanwhile the "regulare flu" continues to cause more deaths than all those others combined and nothing on that!

People miss the difference of normal flu and h1n1. The scary thought of the H1N1 is that it kills people in the younger age range and the normal flu deaths are usually elderly.

Normal flu and h1n1 are down this year thanks to the awareness of H1N1 so many people were extra cautious washing hands and such as well as getting vaccines. The h1n1 would have spread even faster but we got some relief in our schools with the vaccines hitting there first in many areas.

Now that we are going into summer the flu season is really lifted up a bunch. H1N1 is still out there hospitalizing many people but it's alot less now because of the time of year and amount of vaccinated children I think (small amount in comparison to population but a little help goes a long ways).

Regardless, I think people are silly if they think the H1N1 is over and some overhyped thing. As we go into the winter "mark my words" we will see it raise it's head again this time and maybe a bit stronger since it's already an existing flu in so many lands...

Opinion pieces are pretty... meh... regardless though. They are just as credible as an individual's post on a forum.

glad I didn't panic.

And yes, I think the WHO is losing credibility, I know I'll judge for myself if I think a proclaimed pandemic is really one or not, just like I did with this one.

IMO, we don't need the WHO to declare pandemics, truth is, we'll know when there is one.

I imagine if we do have a hardcore pandemic without the existence of the WHO then things would really be a nightmare...
