WinCo Recalls Ground Beef After Investigating Suppliers

Posted: 9:08 pm PDT April 18, 2010Updated: 2:25 pm PDT April 19, 2010
BOISE, Idaho -- WinCo Foods issued a nationwide recall Sunday of all ground beef sold from its stores between March 28 and April 9 of this year after testing found signs of E. coli contamination.

The company originally issued the recall on April 10 and limited it to ground beef sold during that 12-day period from Modesto store. Though the company said that there has not been any confirmed cases of E. coli poisoning since the original posting, further investigation of their beef suppliers led to fears of widespread contamination.

In a statements released Sunday evening, the company said the expansion was voluntary and based on advice from the California Department of Public Health and "consistent with the ongoing investigation by USDA."

"As WinCo has cooperated with public health authorities, new information has come to light that potentially implicates WinCo's ground beef suppliers," said the statement. "Out of concern for the health of our customers and our ongoing commitment to provide only safe, quality products, WinCo Foods decided it was appropriate to issue a recall for the Modesto store."

The recall applies to "all fresh ground beef packed in styrofoam trays with a sale date of March 28, 2010 through April 9, 2010." Customers can return the beef to their stores for a full refund or throw the meat out themselves.

Though most adults can survive E. coli poisoning, the illness can be fatal for the elderly and young children. Signs of the illness include abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrhea.

Bummer, glad I grind my own. I know periodically we always hear about ground beef having problems, never do I hear about cuts of steak and roasts being recalled. So as long as I continue to grind my own beef & pork, I don't worry about these ground beef recalls.
I would rather be Backpacking
