Fischer, one of Folsom Zoo Sanctuary's Black Bears was gently euthanized yesterday after veterinarians determined that Fischer's quality of life had deteriorated to the extent where nothing could be done to improve it. Fischer was one of the zoo's star residents as his unusual adeptness at opening containers provided a testing service for the National Park Service and private companies to test their bear proof containers. Fischer was a little more than 17 years old (in the wild black bears generally live about ten years) and arrived at the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary in December of 1995.

Fischer's legacy will live on at the zoo at the concession stand outside the front gate, named Fischer's Beastro.

When I went camping last year at Onion Valley there was a trail head bulletin board that showed a photo of Fischer and mentioned the Folsom Zoo, it was a warning about keeping food contained and how he was used to test containers. I was surprised to see something about Folsom so far from home in a fairly remote area. (Fischer had been originally captured somewhere in the area there for being a nuisance)

Actually, it was Fischer's Mother being a nuisance, and teaching bad habits to her little cub. She was fond of hanging out where the fishermen cleaned their fish or something like that. Even after relocation, she and little Fischer would travel all the way back to where the nice men laid out fish for them to eat.

Very sad sad.gif
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken,
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Whithin his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error, and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Shakespeare, Sonnet 116.

The Freinds of the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary has posted a website to share your thoughts and memories of Fischer and to make a donation in his honor if you like.
