It started out so wholesome and well meaning, which makes it that much more disappointing that it turned into strippers and guys fighting over their cousin, lol.

If anyone's familiar with Springer, he's very intelligent and compassionate. He was mayor of Cincinnati then a news reporter which led to him getting his talk show. I vaguely recall a few of those (it didn't get crazy until about 1997) but I wish I could see more of them now.

To refresh anyone's memory, here's some brief clips from the first season:

And a '93 show about runaway teens, it's pretty sad and I heard that guy Dave died a couple years later...but the serious approach was so much better than what he does now.

I don't remember that either.

But one thing is for sure, Springer still gets great ratings for his show at it's time slot. They produce a ton of them all at once. That show is a money maker based on it's low brow premises.

Which says a lot less about the show, Springer or the network and A LOT more about society.

I do rememeber when Jerry's show would be interesting when he'd have topics about race-relations, sexual orientation, etc...he'd would have meaningful and thoughtful discussions.

Phil Donahue used to have interesting shows as well.

The daytime talkshow format took a nosedive quality-wise in the 90s...even Oprah got caught up with this kind of pi$$ing contest...and anything dysfuntional was hip...

Eventually, Oprah took a pledge to get her show out of gutter and keep it out...since then, we've had both categories..in or out of gutter...am glad Oprah and her competitors do have a helath market share...and does say a lot about our soceity...

Springer, Stern...are not gonna go away tho

^ Yeah, I agree. If you think about it, that says alot about the public...since the trashy shows got way more popular than the serious ones! I guess it started changing as early as 1994, and totally by '99 or so.

Montel and Ricki were two of my other favorites in the old days too. They actually never changed that much, Ricki was more youthful topics, but never went all out like many of the others. Montel was a nice, sensible guy with a good sense of humor too.

I'm not surprised many people never knew about Springer when he was serious. I've heard it had really low ratings which is why they slowly revamped it. I admit it was a guilty pleasure in the late 90s when it was first popular. At that point, they sometimes showed reruns from the early serious shows. I was just learning who he was, so I didn't tape them (wish I had now).
