Does anyone know the story of the old firehouse on Blue Ravine and Sibley? I talked to the city about renting it for meeting space shortly after it went vacant and they said that it was uninhabitable. I'm not sure why, but I'm guess asbestos or something. Anyway, it's been a couple of years now. Does anyone know if they are going to tear it down or put something in there?

I, personally, would like to see a "clubhouse" like the rotary clubhouse there. It seems that we really need spaces for clubs in the area to use for events and meetings and for kids and/or seniors to do art or dance classes.

If you look under the Prairie Oaks Forum and go down a few items you will find this subject from prior conversations.

I received an e-mail from Eric Dutton, Fire Chief, City of Folsom.
I called him back and here is some of what he told me.

1. There is moisture problems in the building, leaks, condensation,
mold, etc.

2. The problem has been turned over to an insurance company for final
closure and the fire department and the city is waiting to see what happens there.

3. Will they tear it down and rebuild, will they just sell to someone that
wants it, or whatever.

4. The Chief did say that there were people interested in the property.

5. The Chief did say that they sent people down to mow the grass and
clean it up this last weekend.

6. Once they get the problem taken care of through the insurance company
they will decide what they want to do with the property and then take it
to the planning commission and city council.

7. It will probabally will not be a fire station ever again.

It is my understanding that the Old Firehouse is contaminated with black mold and that was the reason for closing it. If this is true, I think it will have to be torn down. That black mold is a horrible thing. Our friends in Rescue had it and the whole house had to be destroyed and it really ruined their health.

Dear Calvin,

Yes there was a mold problem in the building that may have been related
to a roof leak. that is why it is no longer being used as a fire station.
The Fire Service Delivery Plan included the eventual closing of the this
station, with construction of the new stations in other locations. I
will check to see if my memory is correct - but, I think the plan included
selling of the property. I will also find out about the landscaping
and get back to you.

The city has a law suit going on this, I think. I have not heard anything about it for quite some time but do know it was a MOLD problem and they had to leave the building.

If you have ideas on what that land can be used for forward it to the city for comments.

It seems like that site would really be a problem in getting in and out of if anything is built there.

This may be a dead topic, but I have never been surprised at the discovery of mold at this site. Has anyone ever checked out the effects of excess downhill drainage at the hillside behind it? No matter what time of year, it is always draining out onto the lawn and sidewalk/street below. I think perhpas someone ought to look at the drainage issue here first before deciding what (if anything) should go there first. Just my humble opinion for what it is worth. But the runoff and resultant algae on the streets, etc. is bad so no wonder about mold.

The people in the Prairie Oaks area have a question
about the Fire Station at Blue Ravine & Prairie City Road.

Quote:

Now that the old firehouse is no longer occupied, has
anybody heard what they are going to do with it? It
would probably make a pretty cool clubhouse type of
place for meetings, stuff like that. I for one have
noticed it has been overrun by weeds - which is
unfortunate, as whoever occupies this building next
will likely have to rip out the old grass and start over.

Unquote:

I think it was closed because of a mold problem or was
it some other reason.

Whatever it was I would like to know so I can put it
on our board. Also at a minimum it seems like the city
could at least keep the lawn trim and looking good.

I need an answer.

Thanks.

Hi Cal,

I will see if I can find out why nobody has called you back. Yes, there was a mold issue with the building - not the hazardous kind. So, the City
will not be using it for anything and it would more than likely be sold.

I will check to ensure that the grounds are being kept up in the
meantime.

Hi Calvin:

Your message about the subject abandoned fire station was forwarded to me for a rely. Thank you for your interest.

FYI, the Fire Chief and I have met with an appraiser regarding updating an appraisal done on the property back in 1999. Before that process starts though, Eric and I will be meeting with planning staff regarding permitted uses of the existing building per the City zoning code. The appraiser will probably complete the appraisal in the next 3-4 months. After that process is completed, I plan to meet with the neighborhoods adjacent to the Fire Station for feedback on alternative uses for the property.

I will contact Administrative Services regarding lawn care of the property.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks.
