Saw information regarding the upcoming elections for three open positions on Folsom City Council. Isn't some of the FCUSD Governing Board members also up for re-election in November? If I am correct, I think there are three positions on the Governing Board too (just like City Council). I think Richard Shaw, Roger Benton and Ed Short are the three that are up for re-election. Can anyone confirm? Do we know, of the current incumbents, who is running again?

Ed Short is running again. Roger Benton has stated he is not seeking another term. I do not recall Richard Shaw publicly announcing his intentions.

I don't think Richard Shaw is running again. I hear that Zak Ford from the Rancho Cordova area and Bill Miklos are rumored to be running. It should be interesting!

Yes, it should. This is a year of change for FCUSD ~ please take the time to learn about the candidates.

I have not heard of Zak Ford. In regards to Bill Miklos, is he related to Steve Miklos on the Folsom City Council? Does anyone know how to find out more information on these possible two candidates? Website?

I agree with Joanne that it will be important to learn about the candidates. If community members and parents are looking for change, this will be the chance to make it happen! I know I am not particularly happy with the education system in our district. So, I will be doing my due diligence in finding out about all the candidates; especially how they plan on supporting all students/staff and making a difference in our district.

Until August 7, we really won't know for sure. August 6 is the deadline for candidates to file with the county.

Hi all~

I'm new to this forum and I just wanted to say hello and how happy I am to see other community members opening up a dialogue about local politics. I agree with what others have already said--the election for FCUSD will be an important one and it will be an opportunity to make a big difference in the leadership. I look forward to hearing from you all about potential candidates.

We know one incumbent is not seeking re-election so the deadline will be extended to 8/11.

At a board meeting last year, I was impressed with your efforts to fight the rubber stamp process. I hope you will continue to try to see the other side. It's frustrating when things are all ready agreed upon before the vote. The ethics, or lack thereof, which are displayed by some make me uncomfortable, to say the least.

The spin employed, especially about the new district office, is disingenuous. Everyone knows that additional costs, not covered by the bond, are going to be exorbitant. Yet, we find no documentation regarding rehires. We gave three days and have yet to see any results.

Perhaps new blood will give all of us the support we need.

Yes, Bill is Steve's brother. His wife is a teacher in the district.

I read in one of the local newspapers on Aug. 12 that the candidates for FCUSD board are:

  • Richard Shaw
  • Ed Short
  • Ron Melchin
  • Bill Miklos
  • Vincent Hill
  • Zak Ford

Also, I heard that Zak Ford has received in excess of $11,000 from union contributions. I have a lot of hesitation in electing a member to our school board who has looked to outside sources like big money contributors to endorse him. I think it goes without saying that any political candidate who reaches out to big money contributors will owe them something in return. That money doesn't come for free. Doesn't Zak Ford work for a union?

Yes, my friend Zak is union-oriented. During our successful effort to defeat the Measure O school split in 1995-1996, Zak was the editor of the Cordova High newspaper. Up there in the foothills anything having to do with labor unions may be viewed as Consummate Evil, but I think you can make the argument that down in Rancho Cordova they need somebody with a union perspective to protect their students against the Folsom Powerhouse.

In my initial scan of the school board candidates, the name MIKLOS immediately strikes fear. Angelo and AKT have way, way too much power in the district. Mr. Miklos will have to do a lot of explaining to avoid being characterized as the Dark Side candidate in this race.

If I had to vote today, I'd go with Shaw, Hill, and Ford. Richard Shaw was going to retire from the board, but then changed his mind when he found out Miklos was running. Miklos's presence is going to make Helenophobia a significant factor in this school board election.
