Yep, this is just another nonsense issue to waste time & money and for our legislature to not concentrate on approving a budget. Despicable!!
But after reading the article, personally, I think the name should be changed, but not for the reasons stated. I'm apalled that the reason behind the name was about politics and trying to help the Asbestos industry back before it was a known carcinogen. For me, if we want to have a state rock, it should be one of two, either the gold nugget for what it represents in our state history, or good ole ordinary granite as it is the predominant rock of the Sierras, The beauty of our majestic mountains, yosemite, etc is all a bunch of granite. A third choice would be Quartz, quartz is one of the primary constituents of granite, quartz is also the predominant crystal in the sands of our beaches, quartz is silicon dioxide, silicon being at the heart of our electronics industry, there is a reason it's called Silicon valley.
So even though I think our state rock deserves to be re-picked, it's not for the reason as proposed by idiot Romero and now is definitely not the time to be bothered with re-picking our state rock. There are far more important issues our state officials need to be working on.

I'd laugh if it was a gold nugget, since gold is a metal, and the nugget part can be any type of rock. We'd just have to change it again in a few years.
There's a giant hillside of serpentine near where some friends live. We always thought it was amazing that we'd see people chipping away at it, I'm guessing for a little Californian souvenir.

Definition
rock
n.
1. Relatively hard, naturally formed mineral or petrified matter; stone.
2.
a. A relatively small piece or fragment of such material.
b. A relatively large body of such material, as a cliff or peak.
Just because gold is one of the few metals (aka minerals) found in it's pure form (unlike most other metal ores where they are molecular compounds) does not make it "not a rock"
diamond is a rock, and it is a special crystalline form of pure carbon, a gold nugget, falls under the definition of a rock, so it wouldn't need to be changed, just because it is also a pure element that falls into the category of metals.
Hmm, how about just the bird for the state legislature. As most of those idiots could be described as a bunch of turkeys and they definitely act like vultures when it comes to our money.

Come on ladies and gentlemen at the capitol.... do your flippin job and focus on resolving the state budget preferably ontime but that has past. Make spending cuts, eliminate inefficiencies, and balance the budget. Forget your lobbyist or special whim projects that no one really cares about...BALANCE THE BUDGET!

BTW, it's much better told in Yosemite Valley.
