Did some homework and emailed a few people.

Here is a website from the State that you can go on and get some stats.

When I spoke to the person at Cancer Survellaince after being referred from Public Health,
there are many variables, but if you look at Sacramento County and El Dorado County, cancer rate is up there. It is interesting as SLO county where I lived had a high rate as well.
I knew that though. So regardless of what some people think on this site. There is is a problem, but there are many variables, too. But from my understanding all the people in Folsom were here forever that had the cancers and never been anywhere else. So if you are reading this and think there is a problem in your neighborhood, you can Call the Cancer Surveillance Program and they will open an investigation if you provide them with the types of cancers, etc or if you know there is a cluster. I was also told that it is common these days for children to get brain tumors, so that is not good. Why is that? It should not be common. 916-779-0300. There are very nice and very helpful.

I found this recent Sac Bee article interesting:

"According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the suburb of 55,000 is home to nine nursing homes – more than all but four other ZIP codes in America – as well as more than 70 senior care facilities, ranging from small board-and-care residences to assisted living centers and sprawling, luxurious retirement communities.

As a result of that heavily concentrated older population, state public health statistics indicate that more people died in Carmichael – 689 during 2008 alone – than in any other California ZIP code for each of the past four years. About 70 percent of Carmichael's deaths occurred in residents 75 and older, higher than the statewide average.

Carmichael led the state's ZIP codes in cancer deaths during 2008 and was second in both stroke and suicide, public health figures show.

Dr. Glennah Trochet considers these findings a statistical quirk rather than a public health crisis.

'You've found an interesting statistical oddity that none of us were aware of before," said Trochet, Sacramento County's public health officer. "It may be that when people in other ZIP codes become disabled or are near death, they end up in Carmichael.'

After all, as Area 4 Agency on Aging ombudsman Joan Parks pointed out, when families look to place a loved one in care, they don't necessarily seek placement within their home ZIP code." [emphasis added]

Wreathlady thanks for the info. The Carmichael stat could be high b/c the rocket fuel now spills into the drinking water of Carmichael and Citrus Heights. I have no idea why Folsom and EDHs has high cancer rates. What could it be? ASbestoshills is just a funny name I thought of when adding myself to this forum. Could there be underground rocket fuel buried here when Folsom wasn't that big? I have no idea.....Complete speculation. Also, people in the area are more educated and affluent than the rest of sacto-so they could be getting screen better-although I don't have the stats on that either. Cancer rates are higher here, period.

Thanks for posting this wreathlady. These statistics, even age adjusted, are pretty disturbing.

Actually Folsom is in Sacramento County, not El Dorado County. So really not applicable.

I'm sorry, but I don't get your point. I've re-read all of the previous posts and I find nothing that implies Folsom is in E.D. County, so I don't understand what you are saying is "not applicable". What isn't applicable?
Please help me understand your post.

AHILLS stated Folsom has some of the highest rates of cancer in the state in her original post. Apparently she is under the impression that Folsom is in El Dorado County. It is not, it is in Sacramento County which according to the website posted in this thread is right smack in the middle statistically speaking.

While interesting, this doesn't seem relevant to the original concern. This seems to say that Carmichael has a lot of old people living there, and older people die at a higher rate than younger people (which is not surprising). The fact that Carmichael has a high rate of death from cancer and stroke is not surprising...those are more common in older age.

I think the OP seems to be saying that Folsom might have some environmental issue that is causing cancer at a higher rate than other areas. That doesn't relate to this article, which is more about how Carmichael has an aging population, esp. due to its high number of care facilities.

Sorry, I did not get that from the OP (that Folsom might have some environmental issue). OP said, "When I spoke to the person at Cancer Survellaince after being referred from Public Health, there are many variables, but if you look at Sacramento County and El Dorado County, cancer rate is up there."

So, I was just pointing this out as one of the possible variables within Sac County.

Wow. I think I must be misreading both the OP and asbestoshills posts, because I didn't see the topic intent that SunnyCA pointed out (that Folsom might have some environmental issue) and I don't see where asbestoshills says that Folsom is in El Dorado County (says, "I have no idea why Folsom and EDHs has high cancer rates." I read that to say, "I have no idea why Folsom and El Dorado Hills has [sic] high cancer rates." Nothing about counties.

Maybe I am not making myself clear. AH stated that Folsom and El Dorado Hills run very high, much higher than average for cancer of all the counties in California. Although she refused to cite her sources (???) WL chimed in on this thread with her initial post that shows that indeed El Dorado County is pretty high in terms of invasive cancer in relation to other California Counties...but in fact FOLSOM, WHICH IS PART OF SACRAMENTO COUNTY falls right smack dab in the middle- statistically speaking- of all California counties, NOT HIGHER THAN AVERAGE. Now if AH wants to come on here and cite specific reputable sources that she has found to back her fearmongering, I more than welcome her to do so, in fact I have asked her to, but she has refused. Otherwise, please research the majority of AH's previous posts and note the pattern. Then take this one with a big grain of salt.

Both SACRAMENTO and EL DORADO COUNTIES HAS HIGHER THAN NORMAL CANCER RATES. Sometimes we do not want to believe things we read, but as we all know cancer is on the rise everywhere, especially in SAC and EDH.
