Schwarzenegger sets special election dates to fill Dave Cox's Senate seat
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has set the dates for elections to fill the vacancy left by state Sen. Dave Cox's death.
Schwarzenegger spokesman Matt Connelly said Monday that the primary election will be Nov. 2, the same day as the statewide general election. A special election would take place Jan. 4 if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote.
Cox, a Republican from Fair Oaks, died July 13 of cancer. He was 72.
Cox represented the heavily Republican 1st Senate District that includes parts of 12 Sierra and foothill counties.
His death leaves two vacancies in the 40-member chamber. Republican Abel Maldonado left to become lieutenant governor in April. A special election is set for Aug. 17 to fill Maldonado's Central Coast seat.
Note: The last meeting we had with Roger Niello, he mentioned that he might be running for this Senate Seat. I for one will vote for him.

A VETERAN
Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life".
That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

From today's SacBee
Special vote for Cox seat folded into general election.
A special primary election to succeed the late Sen. Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks, will be blended into the Nov 2 general election in California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Monday.
Republican and Democratic voters will get a choice amount candidates running for a party nomination. But if one candidate from the total field of those running in the primary should win 50 percent plus one of all votes cast, then that candidate will succeed Cox outright.
If no candidate wins more than 50 percent, then a runoff election with each party's top vote-getter will be held Jan 4.
Cox, who represented the 1st Senate district, died July 13 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Fair Oaks has expressed interest in the seat. cox transferred $7,800 in campaign funds to Niello shortly before Cox died.
Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, has also shown interest in running for the seat, which runs from the Sacramento suburbs to the Oregon border.
