Calling all residents of the Willow Creek neighborhood that is within Blanche Sprentz Elementary boundaries. The second Public Forum on Folsom school boundaries is THIS Thursday 10/14 at 6pm in the multi at Folsom Middle School. A major topic of discussion at the first meeting, was the district's current drawing of high school boundary lines to eliminate BSE students from attending VDLHS with all thier peers from FMS. Since Vista opened, BSE students had the ability to request Vista via "choice". FCUSD is recommending that choice into Vista be stopped. The current boundary lines need to be "fixed" to provide BSE students the same benefit of continuity of peers as every other set of children in Folsom.

Come be part of the Public Forum this Thursday. Speak now, or forever allow BSE kids to be the ONLY set of Folsom kids forced to move away from thier peers as Freshman.

See the Districts presentation and recommendations at fcusd.org

Update: There were about 4 people from the BSE that were at the first FCUSD Boundary Meeting. On 10/14, there were about 35. Most took the opportunity to speak up on the issue of BSE being the only school in town NOT to progress on with thier peers from FMS to Vista. According to current boundaries (which the district recommends not be changed) BSE will go to FHS.

Collectively, the group is asking the the Folsom High School boundaries be changed to include BSE in the Vista HSAA. In essence, we are asking that the high school boundaries mirror those for our middle schools. We believe that there is room enough at Vista to allow our children to progress on to high school with thier peers. The same benefit every other set of kids in Folsom has. We are talking about an average of 50 kids from BSE per year. We also know that annually, the number of BSE kids would actually be lower than that...as choice into FHS is still open. Some BSE kids who already have a sibling there, or want to be part of a specific program may choose to go there. The district already has the past 3 years of BSE choice data, to see real numbers on BSE kids who were trying to get in to Vista.

We clarified several times that our main concern is the social stress of leaving most of thier friends as entering freshman. A stress that effects some, more than others for sure. But a stress that we wish to avoid, if at all possible. We all think FHS is a good school with good programs. So, no one is saying the one school is better than the other at all.

If you are or were, a BSE family....please come attend the Board meeting on 11/4 at FHS. This is the meeting where district members will give thier final recommendations to the Board for vote. You may also be interested in the result, as the current boundary is not a positive when selling homes in our community. Savvy buyers ask, and good realtors point the school situation out. This is a secondary concern, but no less valid. We've voiced our concerns to the district. Truly, it is more important that the Board Members hear them as well; as they make the final call.

UPDATE: The district has made another revision to their recommendations to the Board. They now recommend that Blanche Sprentz be included in the Vista del Lago Attendance Area. Yeah! The Board still needs to vote to approve the recommendations. The meeting is open to the public, and is this Thursday 11/4 at Folsom High School at 6pm. Also included in this discussion are plans by the district to sell the land the current district offices are on (late next year) which would require a move of Folsom LAKE High School. The district was planning on moving FLHS to portables on site at FHS. If you have comments or concerns about this issue, come to the meeting. Read the recommendations and/or the full packet at fcusd.org.

Closing out this post. Last night, the FCUSD presented thier recommendations to the Board Trustees in relation to thier recent boundary study. The revised recommendations included adjusting the Folsom High School Attendance Area boundaries to align Blanche Sprentz Elementary to attend Vista del Lago with all other peers coming out of Folsom Middle School. The Board approved the recommendations with a few adjustments. Starting next school year (2011/2012) BSE kids will go to Vista. Students who wish to go to FHS to follow a sibling or for a particular program can fill out a school of choice application (there is plenty of room at FHS).

Thank you to all who came to the meetings. Thank you to all who took the time to post comments on the district website. One issue still requires further discussion. That is, the districts intended move of Folsom Lake High School to the vacant portables on the Folsom High School property. If this concerns you, post your comments at the fcusd.org website. Watch for further discussion on this topic.

Another important change that impacts the middle and high schools is the change to allow both BSE and Folsom Hills kids to track into Sutter instead of Folsom if they choose to do so. SMS may include a Spanish program that will allow the FH kids who are in the Spanish program to continue their study. They can then follow their friends to FHS.
"Sometimes on purpose and sometimes by accident, teachers' unions have a long history of working against the interests of children in the name of job security for adults. And Democrats in particular have a history of facilitating this obstructionism in exchange for campaign donations and votes." . . .Amanda Ripley re "Waiting for Superman" movie.

Why would anyone opt into Sutter? That school is so ghetto!

Middle schools aside because they are both high achieving schools with top notch leadership ( and your statement does not even merit reply) ~ parents when considering high school options/ paths ~ take the time to review the curriculum guide for both schools~ attend both orientation nights. Review all the sports, clubs and programs. Find what works best for your child.

Care to elaborate? On the surface, that statement is downright offensive.
