Anyone who has wondered how Taco Bell (and fast food chains in general) can sell a $0.79 taco and say in business, wonder no more.

I'd like to say I am surprised, but I am not. i hardly ever go to Taco Bell, but when I do I usually get a chicken or steak item and not something with the "Taco Filling". I bet the chicken and steak items are not what they seem either.

Tonight's "taco Tuesday" will include tequila-lime beef, roasted peppers and the beef will NOT include any of the "fillers" TB uses.

not surprised at all. A lit\ttle while back, I posted an article about McDonalds and other fast food joints burger beef. The USDA guidelines is an absolute joke/farce. they (USDA) are bought by these mega corporate giants.

Soo.... that looks like beef + the contents of a packet of taco seasoning. What's the scandal?

If you're referring to the article claim that it's "only 36% beef" that isn't substantiated by the evidence.

I wouldn't quote gizmodo as a source of real information.

With the oat, whey, soy extenders, if they'd get rid of the beef they could call it a veggie taco.

It seems taco bell doesn't agree with the claims made about it's taco meat filling

UPDATED CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT STATEMENT
January 26, 2011
"The lawsuit is bogus and filled with completely inaccurate facts. Our beef is 100% USDA inspected, just like the quality beef you would buy in a supermarket and prepare in your home. It then is slow-cooked and simmered with proprietary seasonings and spices to provide Taco Bell's signature taste and texture. Our seasoned beef recipe contains 88% quality USDA-inspected beef and 12% seasonings, spices, water and other ingredients that provide taste, texture and moisture. The lawyers got their facts wrong. We take this attack on our quality very seriously and plan to take legal action against them for making false statements about our products. There is no basis in fact or reality for this suit and we will vigorously defend the quality of our products from frivolous and misleading claims such as this."

What is in Taco Bell's recipe for seasoned beef?
"We're cooking with a proprietary recipe to give our seasoned beef flavor and texture, just like you would with any recipe you cook at home.

"For example, when you make chili, meatloaf or meatballs, you add your own recipe of seasoning and spices to give the beef flavor and texture, otherwise, it would taste just like unseasoned ground beef. We do the same thing with our recipe for seasoned beef.

"Our recipe for seasoned beef includes ingredients you'd find in your home or in the supermarket aisle today:

•88% USDA-inspected quality beef
•3-5% water for moisture
•3-5% spices (including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder, cocoa powder and a proprietary blend of Mexican spices and natural flavors).
•3-5% oats, starch, sugar, yeast, citric acid, and other ingredients that contribute to the quality of our product.
"Our seasoned beef contains no "extenders" to add volume, as some might use. For more information about our ingredients go to http://www.tacobell.com."

STATEMENT REGARDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
January 25, 2011
"At Taco Bell, we buy our beef from the same trusted brands you find in the supermarket, like Tyson Foods. We start with 100 percent USDA-inspected beef. Then we simmer it in our proprietary blend of seasonings and spices to give our seasoned beef its signature Taco Bell taste and texture. We are proud of the quality of our beef and identify all the seasoning and spice ingredients on our website. Unfortunately, the lawyers in this case elected to sue first and ask questions later -- and got their "facts" absolutely wrong. We plan to take legal action for the false statements being made about our food."

Maybe gizmodo knows their stuff about gizmos, but I think they got their "Facts" wrong about food.

That's because taco bell doesn't want to look bad, so of course they're going to disagree.

Doesn't make Gizmodo wrong, just means taco bell doesn't like getting called out on their crappy products.

Hasn't anybody here ever seen Demolition Man? In that awesome film it clearly states that by the year 2032 Taco Bell has won the war between all fast food businesses and is the only place to eat. Could happen...

I guess we will just have to see where the courts rule on this.

I'll put my money on Taco Bell. If their taco filling was more like Jack-in-the-Box, I might agree with gizmodo claim, but it isn't. it is more like what I make at home with real ground beef (beef I grind myself).

not a junkie, but I do eat there.

I like their tacos,

and I like their burritos better than most sit down mexican restaurants now. It seems the sit down joints have this contest to make the biggest monster burritos they can, and so you have to eat them with a fork, you can't hold it to eat it.

IMO, both tacos and burritos are meant to be eaten by holding them, if you can't hold, I don't want it. Some places over stuff their tacos as well.
