My backyard grass is almost dead and I need to get it fixed. Any recommendations on who to hire to get this job done right?

I had the same situation and ended up using Scotts Lawn Service. You still need to mow, but they handle fertilizing, overseeding, and aerating.
It was cost-effective for me - about $39 per month.
My lawn is much improved since we started the service.

I recently hired a guy based on an ad on craigslist. He came in took $670 in advance for sod/soil and other material..worked for one day and never showed up again. He won't answer my calls and unfortunately I don't understand spanish to speak with his wife.
I still see him posting on craigslist for work.

I have an ad from Michael's Landscape Maintenance (530-863-9250)
They mow, blow, edge, hedge, fertilize & weed for $55/mo. Service is weekly.
They also do "free" sprinkler repairs.
