On a friend's recommendation, my wife and I went to The Beacon restaurant in Lake Tahoe last weekend. I had never heard of it, but she promised it was great, and a very popular place. We arrived on a sunny afternoon and were greeted by the sounds of the blues/rock cover band playing outside on the deck. It was a beautiful scene, right on the beach, people boating swimming and just enjoying the lake, live music, beautiful weather. Just about perfect.

We found a table in the bar area, and after waiting for service, decided to put in our order at the bar.

It was pretty crowded, so I volunteered to go to the bar to order drinks. I asked Rose what she wanted, "I'll have a rum runer."

I thought to myself, 'self, do bartenders even make rum runners any more?

I've known her for over 30 years and have never seen her, or anyone else for that matter, order a rum runner, but I figured she wanted to try something different.

I went up to the bar and asked the bartender, 'Can you make a rum runner?' She looked at me like I was crazy or had insulted her drink-making skills. 'Uhh....yeah' was her reply. I said, 'great! I'll have a rum runner and a vodka soda.'

She turned around to the rum runner machine and filled a cup. I'm thinking to myself, 'self, not only do they make rum runners, they've got a machine. Wait 'til I tell Rosemary.'

As I pay for and pick up my drinks, I look at the enourmous sign above the bar which reads, 'The Beacon - Home of the Rum Runner'! Who knew?'

I turn to go back to our table and notice that everyone in the place is drinking rum runners, except for me.

Good times.

That's really funny, Steve. Thanks for sharing. I've never had a rum runner either.

My son had a similar experience at a Waffle House in Atlanta. He asked for pancakes with a side of bacon. The waitress, just repeats back, "Right. That's an order of waffles with a side of bacon." He repeats, "No, pancakes with bacon." She's, "No, child. You mean waffles." He finally caught on.

Yep the Beacon is well known for their Rum Runner drinks. Add the view of the lake from the deck or even the bar and you have the makings of a great day or evening :beverage:

1 oz blackberry liqueur

Made the mistake of going to The Beacon during Labor Day weekend last year. They had a band playing and it was wall to wall people and security (49ers take a page out of The Beacon's security detail) was spot on. The Rum Runner machine could not keep up with the demand. Ordered for our group and the drinks were not close to "frozen" but more like watery slushies. Not good. I've been there other time when the machine wasn't maxing out and it was good. Took a bottle of the mix home and made them in my blender and WOW were they just as good (and cheaper) at home. Definately a fun place to go.
