Just to be aware for those that use the trails, this is from the Sac Bee. The sightings were between Nimbus and Folsom Lake Crossing on the trail.

People i've talked to that live and hunt in the outer foot hills and Sierra's have noticed an increase of mountian lions over the last decade. They also say that it is becoming more common for the mountian lions to go into populated areas and go after pets and livestock.

It's because you can't shoot them. I saw some very large cat prints while out hiking last weekend.

I hear it is because of a lack of trains running through the area!

There is basically zero chance of being attacked by a mountain lion, so there is no need to worry or change your behavior.

While I agree the chances are so remote of being attacked it wouldn't keep me from the trail, it's that "basically" part that would make me change my behavior and be more aware of my surroundings when there are increased sightings.

I posted this because I think information is a good thing.

If you are walking the trail in that area with very small children, you won't want them lagging behind or runnning too far ahead, which is always a good idea, but sometimes we become complacent because we get comfortable and forget we share these areas with wildlife.

I'm glad you posted, Ducky. It is good to be aware that this is a real potential danger. My husband actually did change his behavior-- instead of running the trail at dusk the other evening, he decided to just run on surface streets. Of course, the chance of attack is remote, but he didn't want to tempt fate...

Thanks, bordercolliefan. Knowlege is power, or so I hear. I think most of the sightings have been on the other side of the trail towards Sailor Bar.

My family and I were at Browns Ravine, Hobie ramp, walking around last Saturday, since the water is so low. We met a lady who saw a moutain lion and 2 cubs, feeding on a deer at Christmas. We did see her tracks in the mud and later found the deer carcass, found the skull, ribs and various bones, they were all bleached out. . . I really didnt feel comfortable walking around after that. . .

I saw one earlier this week on the path that goes from the bike trail up to the east end of the Natoma lake crossing bridge.

I just can't honestly see a mountain lion going after a cyclist.
