Honor Killings In Canada

Has anyone else been shocked by this story?
KINGSTON, Ontario — A jury on Sunday found three members of an Afghan family guilty of killing three teenage sisters and another woman in what the judge described as "cold-blooded, shameful murders" resulting from a "twisted concept of honor," ending a case that shocked and riveted Canadians.
Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly killed the three teenage sisters because they dishonored the family by defying its disciplinarian rules on dress, dating, socializing and using the Internet.

In separate news, my daughter's Muslim classmate recently listened to her playing her instrument and stated that "under her religion, girls cannot play instruments."
While recogizing that there are many different flavors and interpretations of *all* the major religions, I hope we can all at least be united in a commitment to fighting extremism and oppression of women in all its forms.

Also in the news today was a story about an Afghan woman who was killed for having borne a daughter instead of a son. I don't understand the culture or honor in any of these stories. Maybe someone could explain to the husband and his family that he's the one that didn't contribute a Y chromosome to produce a male child. Better yet, explain the fact that any child is a blessing, male or female.
It seems that many societies / cultures have similar attitudes (look at China, even the US -- I often hear parents express a preference one way or the other) although the more civilized of those would merely stop at unacknowledged disappointment. It's sad that there is a preference for one gender or another. And usually just for something as abstract as a namesake.
I wonder if we're the only species that has a gender preference..... Chimps, apes, dolphins, whales --- do they have any preferences?

seeing as we are the only species stupid enough to have cultures that dictate who cares for elder parents, who pays dowries, etc, I'm pretty sure we are the only species that has gender preferences for their offspring. Now there are species where a step-father may eat the young of his new wives if the young were sired by one other than himself. And some species may just eat their young out of hunger, but I don't know of any gender preferences in nature. It seems that many societies / cultures have similar attitudes (look at China, even the US -- I often hear parents express a preference one way or the other) although the more civilized of those would merely stop at unacknowledged disappointment. Frogs. But I think they are all hermaphrodites. Something about the females will kill for a male...
hmmm..well for the purpose of this comparison maybe this is a stretch.

Getting back on topic, there is absolutely no honor in killing a child for doing childish things.Oh the irony of 'honor killings' from people (not a people) that have no honor.
What do they say about casting the first stone....?
