Hi Parents-Our son has been assigned books (novels) to read for English, the problem is that he has not liked any of the books and honestly I cant blame him as I've thumbed through them, but I keep this to myself. . .Anyway, I remember reading a book when I was about his age that I think he would love. From what I remember its about a family, new to the US (I think) who takes a job working at a slaughter house but most is about the struggles and triumphs they went through. I've searched online but cant find the name of the book. . .Any idea?

I am almost positive that this is 'The Jungle' by Upton Sinclair

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

It is interesting as we had that book assigned to our class in I think 8th grade - 1968 and it has been one of the few books that I can remember to this day... I have since found a first addition of it and have it in my library... It is a powerful book of the immigrants lives and also the methods of the slaughter houses of the time...

There used to be a joke about this book in Junior High that after reading it - one would not ever eat a hot dog again... But the story goes so much deeper and is a classic.

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

I think it is VERY Appropriate reading for a middle school or HS student. There are way to many now days that want to censure our literature for very stupid reasons... Rise above that and read...

I think we make kids read a lot of novels that were sensational in their time but are not so relevant any more. I've re-read some Bradbury and Heinlein lately and they don't seem nearly as profound as they did when I was 13. Twain still holds up. But I think more nonfiction would be apropos. If you wanted to cover this territory for instance you could assign "The Omnivore's Dilemma" for a thoughtful look or if you want shock value "Fast Food Nation". They cover the industry as it is now, not as it was a hundred years ago.
