Folsom Residents,

There is a Book Drive scheduled at Starbucks at the Parkway, 25055 Blue Ravine Road on Sunday, April 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We are collecting books that the students can utilize at the Vista Del Lago High School Library.

Examples include:

Non Fiction
Literature (Classic and non Classic)
Young Adult Fiction
Science Fiction
Mystery

Hard Back and Paper Back Books all accepted.

Other books will be accepted (i.e. research, science, hobbies, life experience) Surplus books will be utilized at other Campuses and Libraries.

We will also accept music CD's for the student check out at the Library. All music accepted. Examples include Jazz, Modern and Classic Rock, Rap, Alternative, Classical, Progressive, Techno. Please make sure there is no "Parental Advisory Explicit Content" label on the CD.

Didn't they close that library due to budget cuts? I was under the impression that it closed...is it actually still open?

The library was reopened by the Folsom Cordova School District for student use. I believe it is opened four school days out of the week with a librarian staff member on duty.

The silly thing about this is that all of this need was being met before when the City and District partnered. The beautiful library was built, stocked, and staffed. When it was closed within the a few years of opening, the books were pulled and many sold off as a result. The library was used by the students and the public. Instead of running fundraisers to keep it open, which I asked them to do many, many times, they (the City and Vista) closed it. The same old people sit on the Library Commission and new people are not even considered (personal experience).

Now the school wants to do a fundraiser. If I remember correctly, the year they closed the library, the student union elected to hold a very expensive carnival. Perhaps they could have supported their library instead.

I have kids at Vista and haven't heard anything about this book drive. I can't even find anything about it on the VDL edline page. Which group is organizing this?

Hello. This Book Drive is being organized by a Folsom Family. I ask for your help in checking if you have any used books the students can use at the library. Music CD's too! Please let your students know about the Book Drive.

The Folsom Cordova School Board and the Vista Del Lago Staff were notified. Everyone has been very positive about the Book Drive.

Respectfully ~ the FCUSD School Board has not been notified of this event and the board does not approve events of this type.

As a Vista parent and supporter of the libraries in our district/city, I appreciate what you are trying to do and would like to know more details about this effort.

I am one of the "same old people" who sit on the Library Commission - closing Seifkin Library to the public was not an easy decision for the commission to make. I believe that in the end and at this time, it was in the best interest of Vista students and the City. The library is now open 4 days per week for student use/ during school hours (thank you FCUSD and Vista parents who supported the PTSA fundraising efforts) the Georgia Murray Library, at least for now (could change after the city budget is approved) is offering more hours and services.

Were the books seriously sold off? That seems insane. I (kind of) understand if they did not have the $$ to staff it, but why on earth would they sell off the books? What was the harm in letting them sit there?

Yes, the past can be debated and a good point. What you are seeing is the same old thing that happened when I asked that a fundraising effort be made to keep the access to the library open to the public. The numbers were not even that big. And the same people get put on the commission, whether they have applied like everyone else or not. They have their own agenda.

I do hope that you receive a lot of great books. I am a big proponent of libraries and loved that the VDL students used to have access to one. Just having a building with the word library on it does not make it a library. Books are actually an important part of it. Sad that it was "in your best interest" to take it away.

The books were not sold. Folsom Library staff was very conscientious about keeping the books that belonged to the school collection at the site. Believe they even left some of their collection.
